  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I am a junior CAD technician on the biggest project in the UK today. I am part of the utilities sector which involves modelling services such as electric, gas, potable water, sewerage and telecoms and coordinating with utility providers to ensure that our designs meet their standards and work for them.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have largely developed my CAD skills from day one on the project, using a different software to the one i was previously used to. Also professional communication and public speaking too has improved. Through the duration of the course, There are 27 professional attributes that i will need to improve upon and evidence to ultimately complete the course and gain professional recognition.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • The course and support provided by Mott MacDonald is incredible. Everyone around, whether you work closely with them or they are part of a different team, will provide support in every way that they can. I have the added benefit of doing my university study from home which breaks up the work week and allows us as apprentices to spend addequate time on studying.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • It is written into contract that 7.5 hours a week are allocated towards your study, and your lectures will generally fall on the same day every week, making it easy to form a routine. Generally, each lecture will be three hours long and we learn two modules per trimester, meaning its easy to focus on current learning

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I receive a lot of support from anyone and everyone within the company. Me and my line manager are constantly in contact and additionally hold quarterly reviews to monitor my progress. All of my colleagues are on hand to help also whenever i need support with project work or general queries

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • I receive a lot of support from anyone and everyone at the uni. Me and my study coach are frequently in contact and additionally hold extra quarterly reviews to monitor my progress at work but also with my studies. Any queries with the university are often quickly answered by my study coach

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • Being in the first year of my studies, my knowledge was very limited so every lecture i learn something new about the industry whether that be terminology i hear on a daily basis or a new process. As i have only been on one project since starting, My knowledge is limited to one discipline of civils and the course will cover knowledge that allows me to branch out into many others.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • Yes, for example, every month or two my team hold a team bonding event after work, usually on a friday (so we can have a drink). Since i have started there have been four i believe, most recently doing some escape rooms and going for a drink and some food. Additionally, in july, i will be attending Mott MacDonald sports day in manchester for the weekend!

  • Yes

  • They are a company who put people first every time, with a great set of core company values where you feel everyone is equally respected within their individual roles. the work that the company attracts is always interesting. The office environments are inviting and modern but also great flexibility with home working too.
