Trainee tax advisor Review

I spend a lot of time preparing tax computations and having internal and external meeting to discuss strategy and action. As an apprentice with little knowledge, I get lots of on and off-the-job training to help me with my work. I also play an admin role for billing, engaging and conversing with clients as these are easy to get involved in as a first year apprentice.

I have learned lots of new skills, namely: Speaking to small or large audiences in team meetings, 1-to-1s and presentations Managing accounts, right from engaging with a client, to preparing the computations, joining meetings and billing the client I also have developed the ability to take notes, listen and work hard

I thoroughly enjoy what I do because it suits my interests of working hard, using my initiative, skills and experience on the job, all while studying to become a chartered accountant. I have the ability to get involved in projects if I communicate to the right people that I am interested in it.

My programme is quite well organized, I have a lot of meetings and catch-ups to discuss progress, feedback and my own thoughts. However, I do this that there are some things that are hard to understand in your first few months such as what am I studying, is this for my apprenticeship or my chartered qualifications, and a few tasks that feel miscellaneous

I receive plenty of support, I have an apprenticeship coach who helps with the apprenticeships side, a counsellor who helps with the work I have in the workplace and a large, supportive team that I can speak to, ask for advice and receive feedback from

I receive quite a lot of optional support, in the form of emails if I need to ask a question, help in between sessions if in person help is required, and generally a lot of consistent resources in order to help me find the right information, written in a different way

Very well, I think that there are a lot of terms you will struggle to understand in the tax/ finance industry because you haven't come across them before, and no one expects that you know them when you begin, but the training for your qualification really helps you grasp a lot of concepts and definitions that you can expect to see in the workplace

There are loads of activities: Sports clubs, such as football, netball, running Socials when new people join, or someone is leaving, or Christmas parties, summer parties and sporadic events throughout the year There are also plenty of networking opportunities, for meeting new joiners, partners, team members and people from other environments, industries or offices

I would recommend EY to a friend because it has everything you can want from a career in finance. It has endless opportunities for different work, people, tasks, responsibilities and it helps vary a job that most people may look at as one dimensional. It pays well too, which is what people of today need to consider.

Have a genuine interest in what your applying for. If you are not really interested for a career in finance/ accounting, then it shows in your interviews and also shows in your work if you do happen to get a job. So be interested and work hard, do research and really know why it is you want to work here
