  • 1. Please give an overview of what your work experience involved:
  • The work experience involved learning about the diverse culture and environment at a firm such as AoN. We learnt about how they make sure diversity and inclusion is an important part of their business. Also, we learnt about all the different job placements that a person can take at AoN, and that it is not just limited to one aspect. I really enjoyed the group tasks as it meant I had to work with different people and get feedback on different ideas, which was really interesting.

  • 2. What training and skills development did you learn from your work experience?
  • I really developed my communication and presentation skills. This is because throughout the work experience we had to give group feedback and express our own opinions on a certain topic which really brought me out of my comfort zone and built my communications as I learnt how to speak in a constructive way. Also, I became more confident at presenting in front of a big group of people.

  • 3. To what extent did you enjoy your work experience?
  • I really enjoyed my work experience as it was something I had never done before. I really enjoyed it because it gave me an insight on how life is like to work at a big firm such as AoN, experience that I did not think I would have got anywhere else, which is what makes this such a unique experience.

  • 4. How well organised was your work experience?
  • The work experience was really organised as it consisted if managing many different students, all with their different needs, and bringing together to have a productive and interactive experience in this work experience. There were no issues and everyone was kept save throughout the time at the AoN offices which shows how thought out and carefully planned the work experience was.

  • 5. How much did you learn about the company culture and what it would be like to work there?
  • I learnt a lot about the company culture as I was taught about how the company thinks about diversity and inclusion and the benefits of having a diverse work placement brings to the table. Also, it taught me how the wellbeing and safety of its workers is at the forefront if Aon's minds and that it really makes sure its employees are liked after.

  • 6. How much did your work experience help you in deciding on your future career path?
  • It was really useful because it opened up to me different pathways that I did not know existed before which was really interesting because I would really like to pursue these pathways now as they really appeal to me such as being an actuary. Also, it taught me that there are other routes other than going down the traditional university route such as pursuing an apprenticeship opportunity at AoN.

  • 7. Were you paid or reimbursed for this experience?
  • No we were not reimbursed. However, we did not need to be because AoN provided everything we needed from the food and drinks that we needed throughout the day to any reimbursement for people travelling exceptionally long distances to get to the offices. So I did not need to be reimbursed.

  • 8. Were there opportunities for networking and meeting other employees?
  • Certainly. There were many opportunities for networking and meeting other employees. One my favourite moments was meeting the former Mayor of London, Vincent Keaveny, who was a great character at the work experience and he was really helpful to talk to as he spoke in great detail about his past experiences and his life and how he got to where he did, which I found really inspiring.

  • 9a. Would you recommend Aon to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • I would recommend AoN to anyone who wants an insight into the world of finance and wants to get an insight on how life is like at such a firm in the heart of London. I feel like it would prepare them to the world of work and make them an expert on the fields that are available for young people in the future and the many different routes they can take to get there.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Aon?
  • I would certainly tell someone to he confident. This is because confidence is key to getting where you need to be and there will be people helping you along the way but you need to be the one to step up and get what it is you need so that is why you need the confidence. Also, the main thing is to enjoy the work experience because it will be one of the most useful and enjoyable weeks ever.
