  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • On a day to day basis I will create many components on different machinery to certain measurements/tolerances and ensure all machinery I am using is working correctly and is in a safe condition for me to use as well as others. I will also use a range of hand tools to help produce components

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have learnt many new skills as the engineering environment was new to me. Some skills I have learned is how to use machinery such as a lathe, miller and pillar drills. I have also learnt how to use hands tools that I have never used and how to use them safely.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I enjoy the programme very much as I have always wanted to work in an engineering working environment and the programme has been very enjoyable and a new experience for me. I hope to finish this apprenticeship and carry on working within in the steelworks and maintain and secure a job.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The apprenticeship scheme is very structured and organised from the start as you apply. There is always someone to help you if you are stuck or struggling and there is a lot of information about many apprenticeships that are on offer at Tata Steel. Throughout the years of your apprenticeship you will realise it is very well structured and organised.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • During the apprenticeship I receive a lot of support during the apprenticeship on any parts I am struggling with. If I have a question or something to talk about to my employer they will do their best to solve the problem and support you in the best way they can.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • I receive loads of support from my training provider to gain the qualifications I need and they help me with any work or tasks I am struggling with. They also help me with any problems I am facing to complete these qualifications and find a solution or way that can help me to get these qualifications.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • The qualifications I will gain will help me progress further on through the apprenticeship. The qualifications will provide me with new skills which will be necessary when working full-time in the actual Steelworks. These qualifications will also help me on my knowledge in engineering as well as the practical side of engineering.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • At the moment I am studying in college to complete my 1st year apprenticeship at Tata Steel but there are many social events that occur in the Steelworks as well as a rugby team across the road from the steelworks where many good rugby players are asked to play as well.

  • 9a. Would you recommend Tata Steel to a friend?
  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • Tata Steel have great apprenticeship schemes and have many opportunities with different working environments. If people are looking into a engineering area I would say Tata steel is the best option as you will learn many skills as well as many valuable life skills and will hopefully have a secured job if you have completed the apprenticeship programme.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Tata Steel?
  • Tata Steel have a great apprenticeship scheme and if you are thinking of working in an engineering environment this is the best company to go for as there are many different areas of this apprenticeship and will learn many skills that are needed for working in the steel works s
