  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • My job is about managing construction projects within the interior surface centre. On a day to day basis, I will co-ordinate with colleagues on improvements they would like to see, then I will raise orders and prepare/organise contractors executing this set work. This task can become difficult as it must be done around production.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Learnt how to use planning software to construct Gantt Charts. This helps display to managerial figures the current works on the factory. I have also learnt about the background systems of the factory function, such as fire suppression systems and ventilation, which has broadened my knowledge of functioning systems which my specific university course does not teach.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • A lot! The staff have been very welcoming and encouraging to ensure that you understand and learn about all the necessary and relevant information to complete your task or job. They are always willing to sit down and explain things in further depth than required if you want to learn. The work load is nice and relaxed with flexible time constraints, especially when construction projects do not go to plan!

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • University is structured effectively to ensure that you learn all of the relevant knowledge, using one day a week to learn the academic side of things. Work utilises the 4 days that I attend to expand upon the knowledge I have learnt at university as well as expand upon some future skills throughout the week.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • The university offers several different facilities for supporting the students. They have a 24/7 library with a 24/7 chat room for any queries for late night studying. They also offer a Maths café which is extremely useful when the Maths lecture leaves me confused. There is also a network of online resources for when I cannot make it to Portsmouth.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • There are many extra curricular activities varying form learning activities to social ones. For example, the company is owned by a German group, so they offer German lessons so that the communication barrier is not there or if staff just want to learn a new language. There are also loads of apprentice social events organised to ensure that no matter where you are in the factory you are networking with your fellow apprentices.
