  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • My role is extremely varied. On a day to day basis, I work amongst our internal team as well as the client, creating a large exposure to the industry. I not only work on chargeable, external work, but also internal projects, committees and teams. There are no two days that are the same when working in audit.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I joined EY straight out of sixth form at 18 years old. Since then I have learnt the technical skills required for my job (through EY and my training provider) but also professional and social skills required for working a corporate job. I am more confident in presenting myself to a team internally and externally.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I really enjoy my time at EY. The past 2.5 years on my training contract have flown by so quickly. I have received great support from all teams at EY, whether that be my client team, wellbeing support or other colleagues. The programme is structured in a way that enables me to juggle both exams and work which makes the experience much more enjoyable.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The school leaver assurance programme is structured so that all 15 ACA exams are completed over a duration of approximately 4 years. The programme begins with the easier (certificate level) exams and works up to the harder (advanced level) exams as the course progresses. Exams are sat in blocks so those studying only need to focus on exams, and then once they are over, they return back to chargeable work.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • My training provider, Kaplan, are very supportive when it comes to exams. The tutors are exceptional, being able to provide thorough tuition as well as being available for and support after the tuition phase. Kaplan also have a feature of being able to speak to a tutor on any day which is extremely helpful.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • Kaplan, my training provider, provide me with the technical knowledge and skills needed for my professional role at EY. It has improved not only my approach to daily tasks but also the quality of my work produced for my clients. I am able to apply the technical content learnt in my exams to a real life situation.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • EY have many committees such as badminton and football in which colleagues across the office can meet over a passion that they collectively share. Also, there is a social committee which organises frequent socials for the larger teams in the office. There are also smaller, more intimate team socials which can be enjoyed.

  • 9a. Would you recommend EY to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • EY is a well respected, prestigious company to work for. They are a top tier brand, not only providing the highest quality work to huge global clients, but they also respect and care for their employees as a priority. I thoroughly enjoy working for EY and would recommend it to anyone else.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to EY?
  • When applying to EY or another large professional services firm on a training programme, it is vital to ensure that you and your application stand out. Arguably I would say that your traits such as willingness to learn is more important than ensuring that you know all of the technical knowledge required as this is all taught on the programme.
