  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • Financial Modelling - building three statement models, data visualisation using PowerBI, Excel, Alteryx, data handling using Python, SQL, Excel and Power Query. I work in Infrastructure, Government and Healthcare so I work mainly with Government and Local Authority clients. The work is project based, which varies from a few weeks to approximately a year

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I knew basic Python and Excel however I have developed many new skills, including Excel, VBA, Power Query, PowerBI, Alteryx, SQL and Python. Additionally, I have learnt many accountancy skills through the apprenticeship which are very beneficial in understanding my work. I have also learnt a lot of business and soft skills.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I very much enjoy my programme - the hardest part is doing the qualifications alongside my full time job, which takes up a lot of my time and is quite draining. However the actual day to day job I really enjoy and I have plenty of opportunities to learn and develop.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The programme is fairly well structured. The section that my employer organises (for example the internal training, the work opportunities, the added study leave etc) is extremely well organised and helpful. BPP (the training provider) are a bit disorganised at times - I have had exams booked very last minute and have been unclear at times what additional work I have to do.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • My employer is very supportive, there are a lot of people doing apprenticeships in the company which means they are well experienced in managing apprentices. The work you are expected to do alongside your studies well complements what you are learning, and they have been flexible with difficult personal circumstances.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • There are a lot of opportunities for support - how many of these are actually useful or practical is another matter. The tutors themselves are brilliant, very supportive and responsive however the background teams often have the wrong information, book exams late or contact you saying you haven't completed tasks that you have done.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • Initially I wasn't sure it would help me in my career however, now I am a few years in, I can see the higher level content being more applicable to my daily role. I understand more context in business meetings and can understand work tasks much quicker and without further research.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • So many extra curricular opportunities. There are many networks for different groups and interests, so you are guaranteed to find at least one that you want to be involved in. They are very inclusive. The office locations also have their own sports teams and social groups too. Your own team often do social activities too.

  • 9a. Would you recommend KPMG to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • I have really enjoyed working at KPMG so far; they have been supportive, inclusive and helped me develop towards my goals. I have a clearer understanding of my career aspirations now, and my team have helped me find that. The work has been varied and interesting, and I never get bored.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to KPMG?
  • Be yourself - KPMG really value authenticity and genuine character, whoever you are and whatever your background. Be open to trying to new things and finding out about different sectors or roles that you don't know much about. Don't underestimate the power of networks, use the people around you for support, and do your research before applying!
