  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • My role is in HR so I assist line and senior management with employee relation queries and situations such as absence, performance and conduct, as well as the employee lifecycle I.e, maternity, paternity, adoption leave, retirement and annual leave. Supporting managers to get the best out of their teams and manage appropriately and ensuring a great place to work

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • One of the biggest skills that I am continue to learn is academic writing as well as research and sourcing information. A lot of my role depends on current knowledge of employment law and legislation so understanding more of that and where to look for further guidance and support has helped my skills

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I would say it has been a rollercoaster, it is really hard to juggle working full time in an intense role whilst doing this apprenticeship which can have several assignments due at the same time, it has been enjoyable but quite hard to manage at the same time which luckily I have done via an apprenticeship so I do get some extra study time

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • It does work well but at the same time I do struggle with the units that have to be completed during the evening, it is a long day and lots to concentrate on so can take a toll. I understand they cater for people that are doing this whilst in work but it could be improved or at least an option of moving units around so they don’t have to be completed at that time of day

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I am lucky to say that I’ve been receiving quite a lot of support, they make sure I take my study time effectively and are happy to be flexible when I request for some changes and they ensure they keep up to date with latest information from my assessors

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • I have an appointed apprenticeship mentor as well as my teacher(s) who has been really helpful and not sure I would be able to do it without her, she gives me extra time to catch up with her and books regular reviews to make sure I’m on track and continues to support where she can

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • There are aspects from the course I have learned that I wouldn’t have known about should I not have done the course. It also helps you with networking and learn about how other businesses work and to consider different options as well as challenge decisions that you don’t feel are right or could be improved

    8/10

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • There doesn’t seem to be any other activities outside of work, the course is quite full on and people travel from around different areas to attend the college so I don’t think it is always feasible. They used to do trips to tribunals but it sounds like they have stopped them

  • 9a. Would you recommend NHS to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • I would recommend it to them if they’re looking to progress and it is relevant for their career. I would say they would need to ensure they have full support from their employer and to really think about work life balance before signing up to anything as it does take a lot of time

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to NHS?
  • Make sure it is really beneficial to the company and to the individual, make sure that they are given appropriate time out of the class room to be able to catch up on work and assignments and deadlines, and ensuring that they are in a flexible workplace to be able to complete an apprenticeship
