  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • Designing building services for mainly offices which include mechanical and public health insights. This involves making calculations, contacting manufacturers for required materials, creating schedules, drawings and schematics whilst also visiting site to ensure all designs are incorporated there. This is also to ensure any issues are over come and the project is completed at a high standard

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Working within this environment has greatly increased my communication skills however there is still room for improvement. All knowledge of building services from the design stage to construction stage have been skills that I developed whilst working in this job role but also creating working relationships with others to support each other through the process.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I think that my programme is very helpful in creating a future career for myself and hopefully after my course I can gain more knowledge and skills within the business. Tasks vary within the workplace from site visits, to designing, to working with manufacturers so this ensures no day is the exact same.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • When starting I was informed what I could do and my options for various courses which were delivered clearly, so I have had a decision of my own. It has been a very smooth process and when needed others within my company are very happy to assist whether that is in the workplace or within university

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • Any issues that arise whether that is calculations for a project, issues with lecturers at university, or wanting to visit site more frequently, it is always easy to get assistance from either colleagues I work with or do not work with, or HR department specialised for training and development of the employees.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • From colleagues at work that help out, this is considerably good. From lecturers at university this could be improved significantly as our thoughts throughout the course are not fully considered and ignored such as having past paper answers so we can understand the information we require to provide within exams.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • By attending university it gives me a wider knowledge of information that can be used within site visits or through calculations at work for projects. It gives me a better understanding of all roles within a project not just the information I am taught within the work environment such as the electrical side.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • At the workplace they try to have social activities every couple months to engage all colleagues however at the moment this has been reduced since coronavirus but I assume this will increase again back to what it used to be soon. There are general activities that are sent round the office as well such as planting trees

  • 9a. Would you recommend Troup Bywaters + Anders to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • It is a good way to gain a qualification such as a diploma, degree or masters whilst still earning money and working on the job so you are putting the knowledge you gain to use. There is also a lot of support from others to help you through the process.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Troup Bywaters + Anders?
  • Be honest with what you would like to do because some people just do one qualification and stop as that is what they would like to do but they push you to do more so you can learn more which is good but it is to your own personal choice
