  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • i am a team leader at a greene king pub. for this role i have many things i have to do in my day to day shift. i do things like counting the tills during mornings and evening and i also have to count the safe during the day or at th end of the evening. i do line checks, spot checks i make sure stock is correct and i also fill up the awp machines. i interact with customers and my team on a daily basis and also with my lifetime trainer during my course work. i am responsible for my team and how the pub runs at all times during my shift and even when i'm not at work i sometimes have responsibilities to think about such as running the pub instagram page and answering questions any of my team might have.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • during my job working for greene king for almost 4 years i have made my way up to team leader and put work in for my level 2 team leader qualification. i am now working towards my level 3 qualification and i have also been put through a course to obtain a personal licence. i have learnt a lot about how to handle and talk to customers through my years of being behind a bar and it has built up my confidence so much.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • in the beginning i wasn't too sure if the course was for me as i lacked the motivation to push myself to learn but i quickly gained an understanding of what the course truly meant for me and the types of qualifications i could gain from it. i am now thoroughly enjoying the courses i have done and still doing and i have learnt so much about things behind the scenes like running a business successfully and how to be a team leader well.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • i would say that the programme is very well structured especially now that we have moved onto aptem where every section of the course is laid out into months and they each have days set next to them in which you need to complete them by. this really helps someone like me because i am bad at allocating my time to do my work well and with it being laid out in front of me it is so easy to keep on track. the resources i need are all there as well and i feel that the tasks i need to complete are explained well.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • my employer is great with support. if i need the time within my job to do some course work then i am allocated those time slots, it is the same with when i have meetings to go through my studies, i am allocated those slots. if i ever have questions or need feedback from my work he is there to do so and offers me the time that i want.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • my training provider is always there when i need him. i can call or text him and he will answer the questions i have. i think is really good because he trains so many other people at the same time yet he still manages to fit them all in and you never feel left behind or stuck on questions that you need advice on. he also has a positive attitude towards supporting me at all times and is really supportive when giving feedback and telling me the work i have done is great, but always lets me know that he is there to help whenever.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • i really feel as though this course helps me better myself in my job because i have learnt so much about how i should be doing things properly. for example, i did a section in my level 2 and touched on it again through my level 3, about the different types of leadership styles. this gave me a great insight into how i work and how i should be putting my strengths into managing my team in a way that shows those.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • we do have activities available to do in my work place. every thursday night we have a pub quiz which brings in a lot of people, even the bar staff get their own team. this quiz has been going on for some time and even went on through lockdown, doing it online via facebook and keep everyone motivated throughout. we also host live music nights and do things for charity such as cocktail evenings and bake sales and coffee mornings.

  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • i would recommend greene king to a friend because they are a company that is all about making sure you get the best out of your job. they offer qualifications such as this course and they really support you with that throughout. they treat you fairly and pay you well if you can show you are good at your job. they are also a great company because they focus on things like reducing wastage and carbon footprints and doing better for the environment.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Greene King?
  • firstly i would say i’d you are applying to a greene king pub, you should be prepared to push your confidence and watch it grow, to meet new customers that will become life long friends, and to learn and grow every day. greene king is a fantastic opportunity to not only grow as a person but also to increase your knowledge and also receive great rewards from the business to keep you there and for them to thank you for your hard work. it really is a great company and a great industry to work in.
