  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I am a mechanical engineering apprentice and this role requires me to remove and repair damaged or worn components from different pieces of equipment, I am also required to carry out many different checks on the kit we use in order to make sure the area is safe to use.

  • Yes

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I think the apprentice programme I have been a part of is the best in Wales and arguably the best in the UK. And it is clear to see why with the work and experience you are able to carry out and gain

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • Very well organised and the structure to how you work and who you report to is easy to follow and straight forward

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • As part of this apprenticeship you are required to carry out a lot of work ranging from NVQ and then your competencies on top of projects and college work, the support and aid you receive going through that is great and was detrimental to my achievements

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • Again, I am always offered help with my work from my area engineers, are manager, inspectors and fitters in my works area as well as the boys in the academy whenever I needed their help with NVQ work

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • I feel that the work involved with the qualification is important when working in the environment I am in at the moment especially when it comes to safety and what equipment is intended to carry out what job

  • Yes

  • I believe that TATA steel is one of the best companies in my area and the opportunity they offer you to excel in your career regardless of the path you are currently undertaking is incredible and the process of what they do there is interesting and gripping


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Tata Steel?
  • Understand what is required of you before applying (ask apprentices and former apprentices), whenever you are given work do it straight away don’t rush! Especially your competencies start them as soon as the work is given to you, you’ll appreciate the work put in in the long run
