  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • An overview of my role as a Pension Administrator (Apprentice) is that they are responsible for the daily administration of pension schemes and policies. Additionally, they make sure that both new and existing members policies are accurately maintained and serviced within the client deadline. This maintains the reputation of BW and its staff and reduces the chances of receiving complaints. Some of the day to day tasks include: - Answering enquiries by telephone, post or email. - Using a computer system to look up information and update records. - Calculating pension forecasts and preparing statements. - Processing pension contributions. - Transferring benefits to another pension provider if a customer changes employer. - Arranging payment of pensions and lump sums. - Keeping accurate records. - Keeping up to date with pension and tax laws. They also provide information to give to members about their pension including their overall policy, the value of funds, and their tax relief entitlement, probable cash sums on retirement, what happens to their money if they leave the scheme and whether they can transfer their benefits into another scheme.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have developed more administration skills and understood the importance of being organised in order to meet client deadlines and prioritise what I need to do during the day by blocking time out in my calendar and referring to it at different parts of the day. I have also developed further confidence over the phone

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I enjoy the programme as its engaging and TGC training providers are knowledgeable. It's also nice to know there are other apprentices at different stages so I can see what to expect when i get further on in the programme and it definitely includes elements of BW values such as being organised etc.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The programme is very organised and it seems as though they make clear connections with BW with updates etc. This is important because I can then ask TGC or mentors in BW questions. i have support from both my team and TGC whenever I need it. having monthly reviews with my training provider also ensure I'm on track and don't fall behind.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I know if I ever need support that there are different areas I can go to receive it, whether its my manager, my team, other apprentices or TGC. Being asked at the start of every monthly review with my BW mentor, TGC and progress reviews if i have any concerns both inside and outside of work that I know if i have any future problems then i always have an opportunity to say.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • my training provider gives me as much support as the can when I need it. If i have any issues with completing a part of my apprenticeship such as my knowledge statement then i know if i email her then i will get a response the same day if not within a few hours.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • i feel as though the apprenticeship is very relevant to the job role and covers most basic knowledge and is a good entrance to get into the Pensions sector. i now know a lot more about pensions and the different types of provisions and how many parties are actually involved in the processes of keeping the schemes maintained and in line with guidelines and regulations.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • there are many extra-curricular activities in BW. they often hold events/meetings to celebrate things such as world earth day, Easter, the female rights and pay gap and other smaller events. there are also other smaller events such as football etc that some bw staff organise for others to join.

  • 9a. Would you recommend Barnett Waddingham to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • its a very friendly place to work and all colleagues are really welcoming. all different levels sit on the same floor for example apprentices and partners and principles so you get to know a lot about other job roles and how people have progressed etc. there is also an opportunity to progress and a job at the end of the apprenticeship.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Barnett Waddingham?
  • i would say to go in open-minded and don't be afraid as it always takes a few months to settle in and get your head around the new environment - especially when you've had no office experience before! The application process is the most efficient i've experienced as you have a call with the Growth company first to see if you suit the apprenticeship and then have an interview with BW to see if you fit into teams and how you'd get on with other colleagues.
