My role as an apprentice in TATA Steel is a electrical engineer. Some of the day-to-day things that I work on include; lighting, sockets, motors and distribution boards. The apprenticeship teaches you on how to maintain plant equipment, to keep the business running, as well as working on new installations which aligns with the modern day engineering works place.
Before starting the apprenticeship I had no background on any electrical work at all. As part of the apprenticeship scheme I carried out an NVQ qualification in electrical engineering, whilst gaining essential experience on the tools on site. Overall the apprenticeship has given me the chance to become a qualified electrical engineer, and have the skills to work in any electrical industry.
During my time on the 4 year apprenticeship programme, I have very much enjoyed my time. From my NVQ qualification, to the experience I have gained out on plant, everyone has supported me throughout my apprenticeship and helped me develop my skills. No day is ever the same in TATA Steel, which helps to keep the enjoyment of the workplace.
The program which I have been on over the last 4 years is very organised and clear. Before you start the apprenticeship, you are informed on how the 4 years will be structured. The first year is purely college based, where you gain your level 2 NVQ qualification, and then the 2nd, 3rd and 4th years are used to gain a level 3 nvq qualification and develop the right skills to become a good electrical engineer
I receive a lot of support from my employer TATA Steel. As part of the apprenticeship, I receive reviews every 8 weeks to make sure I am on track with my work and try at my experience on site is pleasant. Everyone within the business is always willing to support you along the way, and answer your questions when needed.
My training provider TATA Steel provides a great amount of help when working towards my NVQ. The training academy which all the training is run out of, stride to make sure I am on track with my qualification, and my colleagues on site are always willing to help me with my NVQ.
My NVQ qualification makes sure that I cover a wide range of jobs out on site. The nvq helps me gain a lot of new skills which I may not have visited. Therefore, during the apprenticeship I would have gained a broad range of skills which help me become a better overall engineer.
TATA Steel run sports events outside of work for everyone to participate in. These events are always competitive and the wide range of sports makes it appealing to everyone. TATA Steel also sponsor evens around the local community, which provides great opportunities. I have participated in a workplace football event myself.
