  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I work within the sales team on a daily basis. I also have had the opportunity to work cross-departmental, go on day trips and overnight stays and am a part of Tarmac's Core Skills Development Programme, which has been excellent for giving me the opportunity to learn so much and network with lots of different people across the company.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have learnt many new sales skills through working with internal and external sales teams, as well as through my course with GI. These include learning from shadowing colleagues, getting involved with customer meetings and watching online lectures and courses.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The development programme has a structure of 8 modules throughout the year and a half involving different site visits for learning and team building exercises. We have smaller action learning groups to complete projects and go for site visits. We also have frequent meetings with managers for support

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I receive a lot of support from my line manager - we have regular 1:1 meetings, as well as being my main point of contact for any support I need. We also have meetings with the learning and development team in HR to discuss my development plan.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • GI offer monthly unit training sessions, as well as a main point of contact for any support we may need. The off-the-job activities mean that I can learn from many different resources from online lectures to podcasts.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • By doing the course alongside learning from having a practical role in the sales team means that I get the chance to put all of the skills I learn from the course to practice as I go, which I enjoy as it means that I can see a progression in my skills.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • I have been to one social event since working with Tarmac (other plans were cancelled due to covid), which meant that I got to know my colleagues well from an early stage of joining the company. I have also been involved in a number of visits/events with the team, with more to come throughout my course.

  • 9a. Would you recommend Tarmac to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • Tarmac has made me feel very welcome and has given me an easy transition into a professional working environment after being in school. I feel very inspired and motivated by the number of opportunities across different functions in the company, and believe that there would be an opportunity for anyone to excel.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Tarmac?
  • My advice would be to be yourself and put yourself and your ideas out there. There's a lot to learn, especially if you have no experience in construction, so learning a bit about the company and what we do/have done will help.
