  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • As a pension administrator I keep control of the member database, I work through different tasks like retirement quotes and transfer quotes, take member calls / queries, I run updates and write letters. At the beginning of the apprenticeship I was taught the more basic tasks like member updates (change of address, members details of change of bank) as well as doing the post each day. Over time I have been eased into the more complex cases and member calls which has been great

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have learnt lots of new skills and good telephone manner. Before doing the apprenticeship I had never really taken any difficult calls so that was new to me. I think I have always been good at working in a team but since joining BW it has allowed me to develop this skill whether it be in team meetings or just general assisting others to meet the standard.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I have thoroughly enjoyed this apprenticeship programme. It has been excellent and I have learnt so many new skills which I can take forward into my own life. Some of my favourite days were down in the London office where we worked with all of the apprentices from across the country.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • I think that BW have been great and the structure of this apprenticeship has change from when the first set of apprentices joined till now so that just shows that although I already think the structure was good they are still trying to improve it so new joiners can have a nice experience

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I think that I have been provided with enough support throughout the apprenticeship. Bac when we first started in September 2019 all employees would be in office so the support would be there but since covid hit BW as a company have adapted incredibly with people working from home but still being able to use fuze to offer support

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • I think that the support we have been given was fine throughout. I think when I was in gateway I was able to ask better questions about the work ahead of us and get better support. Samantha from The Growth Company was excellent and set me targets that I needed to hit which really helped me complete the assignments and PowerPoints to the best of my ability.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • We had to do a few PowerPoints where we went through the process for Retirement Illustrations and Transfer Out Quotes differing in complexity which was great for getting the information that I have learnt back out proving that I know how o do certain tasks and follow the correct processes.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • There is lots of things that you can do as extra-curricular activities. I was involved with the 5-a-side football we used to do in the Bromsgrove office during lunchtimes. Since Covid hit there has been reduced numbers of people who go into the office which has meant that we have currently stopped the 5-a-side but as more people start to come in again I'm sure we will continue it. here are loads of other things you do can do too!

  • 9a. Would you recommend Barnett Waddingham to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • It is such a good company to work for. They offer great support when needed and it definitely feels like a community with everyone having the same core values. Everyone is so lovely and able to support each other through these tough times. I have learnt valuable lessons that I will remember forever!

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Barnett Waddingham?
  • Just go for it! If you have an interest in finance or anything likewise definitely give it a try. I could tell from going to the induction days and assessment days that it was such a great company to work for with everything being so organised and well managed. There is plenty of areas I can progress into now I have completed my apprenticeship.
