  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • My role on a day to day basis is running shifts independently and alongside the assistant manager and general manager. I open up in the morning and cash up at night. I can also do wet stock takes, wages, kitchen checks and locking up. I make sure that the whole pub is up to a 5* standard.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • During my apprenticeships I have got a better understanding of customer profiles, management and leadership skills. I have got a better understanding of motivating your team members, the difference between customers wants, needs and expectations, brand standards, dealing with conflict at work and dealing with underperformance in a team. I have also got a better understanding of which wines go with different foods.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I enjoy my programme because I am learning new skills and gaining knowledge to improve my performance at work. I enjoy talking to my trainer, especially when they have experience within the hospitality industry. I find it hard because my programme started just before covid and I have had quite a few trainers.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • My programme is organised and structured. I get specific modules to complete each month. my apprenticeship got stopped not long after it started due to covid but once it started again and I had a trainer things have been structured well. Unfortunately everything is now done over the phone but once me and my trainer set a day and time for our call its always right.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • My trainer gives me a lot of advice and is extremely helpful whilst I have been completing my qualification. She is always encouraging me to phone or email her if I need any advice with anything. She also helps me each month with my modules through a meeting, and because she has experience with the same trade, she gives me advice with my job.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • We don't have any extra-curricular activities through work, however, during lockdown, we were doing weekly quiz's together on zoom. We also speak regularly on our group chat. We also do a pub quiz every Wednesday for our customers, and if we are off that night we are encouraged to take part.

  • 9a. Would you recommend Marston's to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • Marstons is a company that supports all of their employees. Throughout lockdown they have been sending weekly emails to every employee whether its to help with their mental health, wellbeing or general support. They are also very supportive towards their employees and have been extremely good with our foulough throughout the whole pandemic.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Marston's?
  • I would inform the person that the hours can be unsocialble because you have to work evenings, weekends and bank holidays. It is a very demanding job but it can also be very rewarding. You make friends for life and you can also get to know regular customers. overall, its a really good business to work for.
