  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • My role varies on a daily basis and can consist of many different things. I am given the chance to work on many different clients - from multimillion companies to start up businesses. Audit is all about the checking of company’s financial statements to ensure everything is correct which means that I am part of many different year-end audits, so help to carry out the processes and procedures involved. This is all done alongside my studies which allows me to learn whilst being on the job.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • My communication has improved significantly, as I am expected to speak with clients on a daily basis. I have also learnt the importance of teamwork and how this contributes to high quality results in the working world. This is because I am placed on to different teams for different audits, which means I am constantly working with new people.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I enjoy my program very much as it allows me to meet new people from different backgrounds everyday. As someone who didn’t see their self going to university, I can honestly say that this is the correct career path for me. It also feels amazing to be able to learn whilst getting invaluable experience (earning money as part of this is up there with the benefits).

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • My program is structured in such a way which allows me to gain knowledge of accounting which is used in my day-to-day roles at KPMG. My apprenticeship contains 20% off-the-job learning which I usually spend completing training courses or at college where I’ll learn content to sit exams. This sounds overwhelming however due to the structure of my course, I am able to have a good work, study and life balance.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • At first, I was worried about how much support I would receive through the duration of my apprenticeship. However, upon joining KPMG I have come to realise that the support received is immense. KPMG is understanding of apprentices and that sometimes the work and study balance could get overwhelming. They offer a range of different sources of help to all employees - this includes well-being support, medical benefits, support groups, days off for tuition and exams, and much more.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • Apprentices receive lots of support when working towards qualification with days off for tuition exams and extra learning support if needed to pass exams. Also, if things start to feel too much at times, things can be put in place such as deferral of exams to ensure you are comfortable.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • My studies have helped me on many different occasions when I have been put on certain audits. I have faced situations where I have been required to use my accounting understanding and complete work based on that. This has helped me also to solve certain problems that I have faced and to ensure that clients receive high quality results.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • There are opportunities to join many different societies, or even to start one yourself. These societies can be based on any interests or hobbies that you have and allows you to share these with colleagues with the same interests. KPMG also gives employees the opportunity to complete volunteering which is great as it means they are living up to their corporate responsibility.

  • 9a. Would you recommend KPMG to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • I would definitely recommend KPMG to a friend. Specifically my program, as it means that I will leave with invaluable experience and audit knowledge – making me an asset to any future employer. There is also opportunity to build great friendships within the company, as KPMG is all about keeping colleagues close rather than just just treating them as a staff force.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to KPMG?
  • I would definitely recommend fully researching into the role you are applying for so that there are no surprises when joining. To help complete and fill out the application form, I would strongly suggest that you have a look at some of the values on the KPMG website and incorporate this as much as possible. Please do not hesitate to message me of you have anymore questions.
