  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • Working within an audit team of individuals at different stages of their careers I examine company accounts and financial statements to verify the accuracy and reliability of them. I prepare reports, comments, workpapers and perform different types of testing, such as controls testing and analytical testing. This is done by going through a clients financial records, such as the balance sheet and income statement.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I feel I have developed an eye for attention to detail which is extremely important in the audit practice. I also feel I have gained a keen interest in the financial system. I have developed my ability to work under pressure and towards demanding deadlines, as well as my ability to divide my time between work and study.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I enjoy my programme despite the challenges. At times it may feel difficult to balance both work and study, particularly when you have exams to pass, however once you get over that initial hurdle and find your feet, the learning process feels really quite enjoyable and you definitiely feel you are ahcieving something.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The programme is very well structured. The exams that you do fall in line with the practical work which you carry out, allowing you to develop your understanding of the field over time. Exams are every few months, instead of every month, and you are given tuition around 3/5 weeks prior to taking the exam.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • The support I receive from my employer is great. It is not forced so you do not have to take it, but know it is there should you need it! I have a performance manger who in short, acts like my mentor. This is great as I have developed a good relationship with her and know she is always there if I need anything.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • Your training provider and tutor is always just an email or a call away. They are always willing to help and are on hand whenever you need them. In addition, when exam times roll around, the training provider sets mandatory 'steps' for you to complete which have deadlines. These steps are there to test each chapter of your revision and consolidate your knowledge. They also highlight gaps in your knowledge.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • I definitely feel that without my qualification I would not be in a position to complete my job. The qualification proivdes you with the key knoweldge that you need, particularly when entering the field at the beginning of your career, with no prior experience and/or knowledge. The qualification also enables you to have confidence in your abilities instead of thinking you are not capable or good enough.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • There are many extra curricular activities available almost every week. From being given time to complete volunteering within working hours to attending team socials and quizzes, there should be something every week. Also, don't feel you are required to take part in activities if you don't feel you can/have the confidence to. Nobody can force you into anything and they are just there as an option.

  • 9a. Would you recommend KPMG to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • A friendly, enjoyable environment to work in. Yes, at times you feel pressure and find certain things difficult, but that is the same with almost every job and life in general! The experience that you gain at a Big4 firm will also set you apart from most others within the field of accountancy.

  • Firstly, I would say- do not give up! From the interviewing process right down through to the practical work, the job itself and the exams, there are always blips and difficult hurdles to jump through, but nothing you can't do or acheive.
