  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • My role involves working in Audit as an audit assistant. On an interim audit, I will get to know the clients processes and controls in order to gain a good understanding. We will then start testing their controls and more substantively at year-end, for example cash, payroll and turnover testing.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I had built upon the communication skills I already had and definitely became more confident in the way I communicate. I know how to tackle difficult conversations with clients and build upon the client relationships. I had also developed more excel skills and taking training in order to make this possible.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I definitely enjoy the programme I am on. I am enjoying the work I do on a day to day basis, but I know that with the working from home situation it is hard to fully enjoy the role not being surrounded by people. The longer I have been here the more I am enjoying it.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The programme is very well organised. There are plenty of training or off the job learning opportunities to make up 20% of the hours we need to complete the apprenticeship. We have exams every few months and have that time booked off in our calendar. We know our exam schedule a year in advance.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I receive plenty of support from my employer and even when I don't need any support I know exactly where I need to go to get it. My performance manager is always there if I need any support, so is my people leader and anyone from management. They have provided lots of support throughout the pandemic.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • I receive sufficient support from the training provider when working towards your qualifications. There is always a contact to email if required. After the tuition is provided, we receive emails of when the assessment step ladders are due. However, if you do have any questions you have to approach BPP.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • I think the most recent exam and the next upcoming exams will help me perform better in my role. Final accounts preparation helped my work but not as much as the Advanced bookkeeping exam. The upcoming External Auditing exam I believe will enhance my performance at work much more than the others.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • There are plenty of teams to get involved in for interest groups, for example food or sport. There are also netball and football teams. I am involved with the corporate social responsibility committee and we work together to fundraise for charities. There are also committees more widely across accountancy firms.

  • 9a. Would you recommend KPMG to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • I would definitely recommend KPMG to a friend because they genuienly care about their staff and wellbeing. There are a number of channels to go down if you are stressed and people to reach out to. They are supportive of flexible and hybrid working and the people are very friendly.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to KPMG?
  • I would recommend others to research KPMG and discover the work they do outside of auditing/tax etc. I would also research the behavioural capabilities that KPMG look out for and relate to these in your interview and application. I would also recommend that you make sure you are passionate when applying for the job to stay motivated.
