Health Improvement Manager Review

Operational management of a Trust wide stop smoking programme for inpatients. Management of advisors and general programme overview. Performance monitoring of contract and staff. Recruitment, service improvement and implementing strategy. Advising Trust on local tobacco control standards as well as recommendations for patient treatment pathways. Oversee running of staff service.

Managing conflict situations; how to approach the individuals involved and having difficult conversations in order to identify the source of the problem as well as a solution too it. Various models for leadership style and how to adapt my style dependent on staff member. Changed my whole approach to management since starting this course.

Considering I changed roles and online training platforms mid way through my apprenticeship overall I have enjoyed this course. There are certain elements that could be improved but the tutors have been great and the topics covered really help you think about your way of working, everyone has something to learn.

On the whole very well, having had three tutors across my two years some are more organised than others. I think the Bud platform is far superior to Smart Assessor although it still needs work. The comms between C&S and Paragon could have been better but generally all well organised.

From my original employer, a lot, both my manager and I completed this alongside each other and the support was fantastic. They gave me time within my working week to complete tasks and were there to answer any questions. My second employer was less supportive, the pressures within the NHS during the winter months is immense and I generally just got on with things myself.

Tons!!! Gareth is an absolute legend, from start to finish he has guided me through the modules, suggested additional materials I may find insightful and challenged me to achieve the best marks I could. Having had 2 other tutors within this apprenticeship he is worlds above compared to them. What a gem!

Everything I have studied and learned throughout this whole process has contributed to my working life in some way, shape or form. I have started to embed the more complex management elements into my work and am now naturally adapting to the more known elements such as the leadership styles.

There are walking groups and other smaller task groups to get involved in yes. Personally I keep my work and personal life separate within my new role and wouldn’t choose to join one the groups. However, I do attend conferences and networking events where possible to connect with other Trusts and share ideas

Although at times it can feel like steering an oil tanker the rewards outweigh this barrier. Staff benefits are great and they really cherish internal talent and recruit within wherever possible. The secondment opportunities will really help my apply my learning to various areas of the hospital when the chance presents itself.

Gain as much experience within the relevant setting as possible. Gain a recognised health registration where possible. Complete a voluntary placement to show willing.
