  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I start off by cleaning the workshop and making sure all the tools are put back to help the workshop be as efficient as possible, I also make sure our curtesy vans are cleaned and fueled ready to be given to a customer, after ive finished cleaning, ill either jump on and help a fully qualified tech or I will get given my own to job to complete. A normal days sees me start half half 7/ 8 o'clock and finishes at half 4.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have learnt loads of skill from my apprenticeship. I came straight from high school so it was a completely different life style to get my head round, I've learnt how to engage with customers over there vehicle and how to compose my self in stressful situations. Its also developed my on the spot thinking. This has helped me many times when in a situation. Its also helped my time management for jobs.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I love my apprenticeship, I've always wanted to be a mechanic of some sort and when the DAF job came available I applied straight away, I had my I terriers and tests during my GCSEs and from the day I finished school I was started in 3 weeks, everyday is different and thatd what I most enjoy about it youll never have the same day twice, thats what makes the job unique. Meeting new faces from college and work as well is a good thing as you find more people with things in common.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • I would say most of my programme is structured however when it comes to skillet and college they have be abit unhelpfully with how organised they are. For example the lessons at college being abit random and topics not linking. Also for skillet not really knowing what I need to be doing apart from "upload job cards" which is difficult when busy. Overall I'd say its organised to an extent but there are areas that could do with being worked on.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I receive alot of support when needed from my employer by means of a tech explaining how something works. Also, if I'm struggling on college work or VLE work, I can get alot os support where they show me step by step what I need to do to complete a certain objective, overall the support is brilliant and its helped me a few times when I've gotten stuck on something I didn't know.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • Due to me having only a handful of visits its difficult for me to say if I've had support, my current skillet person andy has helped me since he took me on a few months ago but the people I had before I had no help despite me emailing them and messaging them. There definitely needs to be better communication between us apprentices and skillet them selves not just the skillet person who comes to your work.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • I feel that the qualification helps because you learn what the jobs about however what skillet gets you to complete are different to what DAF get you to compete so there is sometimes a mix up of ideas. Especially between light vehicle and heavy vehicle. Also the random PDP tests are abit out of the ordinary and I'm not sure why we need to complete them as part of a HGV apprenticeship, I don't know what they have in common.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • Not really as most people like football and play it. I'm a rugby player so its abit different. With be being a young apprentice aswell going out on socials is abit difficult due to my age. Also my interests are alot different to most people in my work so I do socialise with other employees doing those activities such as weightlifting. I have been given opportunity but like I said I have other interests.
