  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • My role within my apprenticeship as an Engineering Technician is to study Electronics and Electronic principles, concept how electronic systems and components function, study Electronic fault finding, and my BTEC Level 3 Qualification in Advanced Manufacturing. This is conducted at IPS International in year 1 and is then conducted at BAE Systems (Rochester) site in Year 2 and 3.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • This Apprenticeship fully prepares you for an engineering career, kickstarting your journey as an Engineering Technician, I have developed a wide spectrum of skills to add to my skillset, I have developed the ability to Fault find, design and construct circuitry also the ability to interpret technical drawings, schematics and specification.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I thoroughly enjoy my programme, the opportunities are endless, the people i have met so far are incredible, polite and like minded, the skills i have learnt so far are priceless, training with BAE Systems is the best decision i have ever made without a doubt! I hope to progress in my apprenticeship and have an amazing career with BAE Systems.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • My programme is well structured and organised, there is always work in place, especially during COVID 19 and lockdowns, we where always provided with work and support. No matter what is thrown at the careers team, they put their apprentices first and adapt to challenges presented to them.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I receive Amazing support from BAE Systems, The careers team and Head of Early Careers always take interest in my well being and progress, we have monthly catch up meetings and interactions to discuss any issues and questions, we also converse through email on a regular basis.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • The support from my training provider is good, we have regular calls and tuition sessions to help with work. What is expected of us is always well conveyed and clear also communication and tutorial sessions are well conducted.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • My qualification reinforces my skillset and understanding which is essential to performance within my role . The qualification focuses on practical, theoretical and technical knowledge which is beneficial to any engineer.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • There is a range of extra curricular activities to be involved with such as, Charity, Outreach teams, Sports activities and societies. BAE Systems encourages all apprentices to be involved with extra curricular activities providing equal opportunities for all apprentices.

  • Yes

  • BAE Systems has a range of opportunities for apprentices, they are supportive, professional and leaders of their industry, career developing opportunities are endless and they are a really engaging company to work for with unique and game changing products.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BAE Systems?
  • I would advise others to research into BAE Systems and establish an idea of the products we develop and manufacture along with the various sectors we operate in. I would also advise applicants bring something innovative and new to the table to make you stand out, the company is also looking for industrious workers with positive attitudes and the drive to succeed. Most importantly, be yourself when applying and show what you are capable of!
