  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I enjoy my role on the apprenticeship, it involves taking part in agile ceremonies and also triaging tickets which come and testing based on requirements the client has. There has also has been a lot of involvement on learning different ways to test and why this maybe beneficial which has been great. I have also had the chance to work with a range of different people with various levels of testing experience.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • My testing skills have developed, learnt how to use new software. I have also learnt how an agile team works together and the importance of requirements. Also listening to the clients and actually making sure we are delivering items for them in line with their timings are important. I have also learnt different forms of testing and the benefits and set backs of methods. Its been a key learning to understand which method to use.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I have enjoyed the programe as the company is large a lot of exposure into different areas. I have been able to work with a range of different people but have also had a chance to contribute to the team and the programme. The apprenticeship scheme work has been an interesting journey, there is areas for improvement with the scheme of work and the way in which it is carried out by Firebrand to ensure things area streamlined.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The programme and the company was structured well. Things in regards to Firebrand were organised but the feedback could have been clearer as the projects were being completed to ensure progress was being made. Also I feel starting some of the projects earlier would have helped. My assessor did support me with work and marked work over the period, training was arranged and exams were carried out during the apprenticeship with Firebrand. Overall the programme was organised.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • There was a lot of support from the employer they were always there to help me along the way. I was given a day week to focus on the apprenticeship which really helped. They also had regular touch points not just from my line manager but also from other members to ensure I was progressing which was great to see. I also was given extra time to complete my apprenticeship to help me catch up on projects.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • Training provider did provide some level of feedback, but I would have liked more. The training instructors were not always great in their delivery. The assessor did mark my work but expected in a set format and was not so flexible in meeting the work in different sections and wanted me to also identify where I had met the work points, whereby I felt this was restricting to some extent. I also liked I was given feedback but at times with conflicting.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • The qualification was a good but have not completely finished as of yet as I have the synoptic project still left. My level of training has helped me some what perform better but I have learnt a lot on the role and from different people in the team. The theory I have learnt from the apprenticeship has allowed me to apply my learnings which is good. The learning on the job has helped and combing with learning is good.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • Yes I would get involved in a lot more things to help socialise with people and also allow me to network with different people which is good. The apprentices also are able to stay connected and speak to one another at work and this is encouraged within work. There are things from a social point which helps keep everyone connected and is helpful and encouraged within the company. This is very positive to have this in place.

  • 9a. Would you recommend CGI to a friend?
  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • They are have a company who support apprentices and have a lot time for them. They ensure they have support in place but also ensure training is there and they are given the time needed to complete work. I have also felt people are approachable and if help is needed it can be asked for. Able to speak to different people at different levels and have felt I have been able to learn a lot from working here.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to CGI?
  • My advice would be to apply and keep an open mind. The company offer a lot of support and guidance which is great when starting an apprenticeship, they also offer social aspects plus work which is exciting. The projects the company allow you to work on are exciting and challenging but allow you to add value and make a difference which is motivating. There is meaningful but working here allows you to develop your skills.
