  • 1. Please give an overview of what your work experience involved:
  • We started with a speech from a partner in the company, and then went on to learn about our chosen department in more detail, with plenty of Q&A sessions with current apprentices. We found out how the apprenticeship works at EY and got to find out about the local office that we was supposed to be working at for the week, which gave us a great insight into what life at EY could potentially be like.

  • 2. What training and skills development did you learn from your work experience?
  • We learnt many different skills from this experience. One of the first things we could take from it was about goal setting and motivation, which I feel helped a lot as it taught us to be realistic with ourselves, and not to feel worried about entering an environment full of people with more experience. We also learnt about business writing and presentations. From this we could take that it is important to keep things simple as you will be working with people who may not understand some of the more complex terms in tax and audit.

  • 3. To what extent did you enjoy your work experience?
  • I really enjoyed the experience as a whole. It taught me many many things about EY and the way the company works. I particularly enjoyed the case study that we completed, which gave us a really good insight into the type of work involved in being a tax professional. I also found the panel sessions really insightful and it gave us a really good idea of how people find the apprenticeship scheme and why it is so beneficial.

  • 4. How well organised was your work experience?
  • The business academy was organised brilliantly. We always knew what we needed to be doing and where we needed to be. The hosts used Microsoft Teams and its functions really well and it helped with the enjoyment of the experience a lot as we never needed to worry or stress about what was going to happen next. We got an agenda for the next day at the end of the day, which I found really useful as I could think about potential questions to be asking during these sessions.

  • 5. How much did you learn about the company culture and what it would be like to work there?
  • We got a fantastic insight into EY and their culture. It seems like such a friendly place to work. Everyone was always willing to answer any questions that you had about working at EY, and to me it seems like everyone in the office would be willing to help you out whenever we needed anything. I believe it would be a great place to work, as they really are trying to build a better working world.

  • 6. How much did your work experience help you in deciding on your future career path?
  • The business academy has really helped to me decide that I would like to move forward with going into an apprenticeship when I have finished my A Levels. Their scheme seems exciting and I love the idea of being able to work in a professional environment at the same time as studying for qualifications. Plus all of this comes without the need for a student loan, and you are getting paid. What's not to love?!

  • 7. Were you paid or reimbursed for this experience?
  • 10/10

  • 8. Were there opportunities for networking and meeting other employees?
  • We have been able to connect with people on Linkedin, with many of us students creating profiles in the last few days and connecting with each other, which could be really useful in the future. The people at EY also gave us the opportunity to connect with them through Linkedin, so we have been able to build some great networks that could help us alot as our careers progress whether it be university or an apprenticeship.

  • 9a. Would you recommend EY to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • I would recommend EY to my friends because they are a very welcoming company, who are willing to support you on a personal and a professional level, which is important to consider as whilst some companies may offer you the qualifications, they expect you to get it all done without much support, whilst at EY, you can tell that they truly want to make you in to the best version of you that they can!

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to EY?
  • Make sure you take your time over your answers during the application process, as the business academy is very competitive to get on to. I also think it is important to show them the best version of you that you can do as that will impress them and make you stand out from the crowd. If you are unsure whether to go ahead and apply I would say do it! It is so insightful and it looks good on your CV.
