  • 1. Please give an overview of what your work experience involved:
  • The work experience was held virtually. We had several sessions covering a range of topics from working life at EY, what the apprenticeships entailed, and business skills. We were also able to undertake a case study which allowed us to experience what some typical work in Audit would be like. There were also a range of guest speakers who work in Assurance, ranging from a graduate level to senior partners. Towards the end of the week, we had a session on preparing for interviews and assessment centres.

  • 2. What training and skills development did you learn from your work experience?
  • From the work experience, I was able to improve my problem solving skills through undertaking the case study tasks. In addition, the session on business writing skills was extremely helpful as it highlighted key areas to focus on when writing professionally. We were given an example framework and a structure we could follow when writing in a business environment. This was very useful for helping us understand how to structure emails, cover letters and client reports.

  • 3. To what extent did you enjoy your work experience?
  • Initially the work experience week was planned to be held at the EY office in London, however due to COVID 19, this was moved to a virtual event. Although I was unable to experience the office environment first hand, I was still able to learn a lot of information about EY and the working experience. Therefore, I would say I did reasonably enjoy my overall experience, although I would have much rather preferred being onsite.

  • 4. How well organised was your work experience?
  • The work experience week was very well organised and the emails contained all the information we needed. As it was held virtually, there were some hiccups initially with the platform, however the whole team were extremely helpful and all was resolved very quickly. Throughout all the 3 days, all the events were held smoothly and this greatly improved the online experience. The team were always on hand to help with any issues and technical difficulties were kept to a minimum.

  • 5. How much did you learn about the company culture and what it would be like to work there?
  • I learnt very much about the company culture at EY through the various speakers and talks delivered. The main focus was on the community culture at EY and how strong the support system in place is. Everyone seemed very welcoming, open and encouraging, speaking highly of the working environment. The company culture is also very social with several team events, like parties and dinners, held regularly throughout the year. There are also a number of networks to cater for different interests.

  • 6. How much did your work experience help you in deciding on your future career path?
  • The work experience days helped me a lot in deciding my future career path, demystifying the more unconventional apprenticeship route into jobs. I was also able to gain a good insight into the world of audit and assurance, which was great

  • 7. Were you paid or reimbursed for this experience?
  • Yes I was paid a salary for the three days

  • 8. Were there opportunities for networking and meeting other employees?
  • There were some opportunities, including a specific session with the new business apprentices in the local office we chose. However, I would have liked some sessions with those a bit more senior or who had worked for slightly longer at EY.

  • 9a. Would you recommend EY to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • I would definitely recommend EY as a company to a friend. With many work experiences cancelled due to the pandemic, EY were still able to offer a paid virtual event which was incredibly insightful.Throughout the week, hearing from the different employees at EY in various service lines, reinforced the perception of it being a great place to work. EY is also very diverse and appreciative of everyone's various circumstances, and is very supportive.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to EY?
  • I would say be yourself throughout the recruitment process and showcase your strengths. The numerical assessments are tough to an extent mainly due to the strict timing. However, practicing will help.
