  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • During my 2nd year, I have been at BMET doing a foundation degree in Mechanical Engineering. Alongside this, I have been in work completing varied placements in Logistics, Toolroom, Maintenance, Production and Process Improvement. these placements develop key skills for my Technician Job role at Plant Swindon. On a normal day, there is a variety of office based work and practical work.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • During the course of the year, I have developed several significant skills which will aid my future career and development as a character. I believe I have a basic knowledge of engineering principles and skills. My practical ability has significantly developed in units such as engineering drawing.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I have enjoyed the programme to great extent. It has given me huge opportunities to learn new skills and knowledge from very reputable lecturers. I have especially enjoyed the time I have been given to network and build relationships with work colleagues. in addition I have appreciated the continued support from my apprentice manager.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The programme is very well organised and structured. The course is well laid out to us at the start of year. All of units are given sufficient time to be completed and signed off. The holidays in the first year coincide with the college terms. Study time is also allocated for additional work.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I receive extensive support from my apprentice manager. I am given any guidance I require if I have an issue personally or with college work. BMW offers 24/7 wellbeing support and any workplace incidents are treated seriously and with care. Alongside the employer, the training school offers sufficient support on demand.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • When working towards my qualifications the training providers offers continued support academically. Such as additional maths and electronics one to one lesson. This is very helpful when working towards exams and assessments. There are several exams over the first year and there are many assessments that all count towards final grading.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • I feel that my qualification from my training provider will help me perform better in several ways. It will give me skills such as engineering drawing and analysis to forward my ability with technical job roles around the company. Also during my course I have developed a better work ethic which will aid me in completing my apprenticeship.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • There are extra activities to get involved. These are activities such as the Skern Lodge trip. This was where all of the new apprentices went away for 4 days to Devon. This trip included team building activities and adventure courses. Other extra activities included the mountain challenge orienteering event. This is a great opportunity.

  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • I would recommend BMW to anyone since BMW gives all of its employee’s countless opportunities to gain extra qualifications. Alongside all of this it has a genuine family feel to it and the management has a serious care for all its employees. Also, you are eligible for a car scheme after 24 hours!


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BMW Group?
  • When applying for BMW, be sure to research the company and know its history very well. Also it is good to consider if you have a genuine passion for engineering, as this is essential to show during the interview process. Be under no illusion, the process will be tough, but it will be worth it in the future.
