  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I work on innovation projects within the global beverages team. This involves concept design, project management, product development, working cross-functionally with colleagues across the world. I also do lots of research to combine the business knowledge with R&D's technical understanding which enables the global team to conduct projects faster. It's a really interesting role and I learn lots.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Having been on the scheme for four years and across various departments I have learnt lots of skills both technical and soft skills that will support my career in the future. I have gained confidence in myself and my abilities, as well as knowledge in the business and the technical understanding required to progress.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • Overall I have enjoyed my programme, although it has presented its challenges. The programme allows apprentices to rotate around different departments and teams to gain knowledge across the R&D function. This has been interesting however I have had no say in the positions I have had, which has lead to not having all the opportunities have had and not gaining all the skills I would have liked to.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The programme is well structured, with 3/4 rotations available to each apprentice throughout the 5 years. The apprentices are given opportunities across different areas, although whether they are given a choice of position depends on luck. The company don't really work with the training provider which has caused a few issues.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • There is lots of support from my manager, and across the teams I have worked in. Theres also lots of support from colleagues, fellow apprentices and across departments. Unilever provides lots of support for their employees including physical and mental wellbeing, physiotherapy and support lines for anything you need. They are a really supportive company and support is easily accessible. Support for progression off the apprenticeship scheme needs large improvement.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • I receive lots of support from my university, particularly my lecturers and teaching staff. Support is easily accessible online, with lecturers an email away. The university and Unilever don't communicate which has caused some issues, but I have been able to resolve them in ways that have allowed me to continue my degree. I have really enjoyed my degree, particularly the challenges presented with juggling a degree and working full time.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • My degree allows me to build the technical skills required to progress in the industry. it has also given me the confidence to learn and ask question within work allowing me to progress my knowledge outside of my degree also. I rarely use the theory aspect of my degree within my apprenticeship, but the many of the soft skills can be crossed over. The ability to juggle a full-time job and full-time degree has taught me lots.

    7/10

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • There are lots of social activities to take part in within the company and across the apprentice network. There are fitness classes, a gym, netball, football and other sports teams onsite and lots of long walking routes to explore. The community across the site is fantastic, with lots of fundraising initiatives and community support groups. Outside of work the apprentices have also built a social community.

  • 9a. Would you recommend Unilever to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • Unilever are a really good company to work for, and give you a lot of support at the beginning of the apprenticeship scheme. You are given lots of opportunities to learn, and their is a great social aspect. The training providers are really good, and I have really enjoyed both my apprenticeship and my degree. Be pro-active when you wish to progress off the apprenticeship scheme

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Unilever?
  • Research Unilever as a company, particularly its history an its brands. Knowledge of its main competitors is also really useful. Make sure you can portray in your interview why you want to work for the company, smile and ask questions throughout the interview process. Be pro-active, learn as much as possible and don't say no to any opportunities.
