  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I work in HR and focus on data reporting for the business. I have recently transitioned to an admin role from my apprenticeship and am now starting to learn all the basics of the HR shared services team. This includes absence reporting, pay queries, redundancy calculations and maintaining central inboxes.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have developed advanced skills in Microsoft office such as Excel/outlook. I have improved my communication skills dramatically and grown in confidence when teaching knowledge that I have to others. I've learned to use other programs that are more specific to my industry such as HR Databases, SAP and adobe.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I enjoyed my programme very much. The path of my learning was very clear from the start so I knew what was expected from me and what targets I had to hit to get the best results. The QA learners and AA internal apprenticeship team were very supportive at all time, no questions were ever stupid questions. I received so much support around assignments, constructive criticism and praise when handing work in which helped me improve as I moved further on in the course.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The programme consisted of some classroom learning mixed with online learning and this worked really well for me. I found that the two days in the classroom gave me the confidence to complete the EPA tasks, such as the presentation. It was well structured and outlined from the start, however I did have some changes to my coaches throughout the programme which only effected me slightly. The 20% given to me at work was very appreciated for completing my college work and this helped me majorly towards the end.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • Everyone in The AA was over supportive of me and really boosted my confidence when completing the course. I had so much support from my line manager and mentor in my team. They both helped me out, whether it was spell checking my work or giving me praise after I have passed different sections throughout. The lady in charge of apprenticeships was great she was always there if I had any questions and was more than happy to assist with any queries I may have had. Once I completed my course at the end of last year I gained a Distinction across all and this was celebrated throughout the function which was great.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • My provider was always a phone call away if I ever needed any further support. They had a really good presence online throughout the course which was great. Even in the small amount of classroom sessions I gained tons of knowledge and skills needed to complete my EPA. My skills coach in particular, the lady that looked after me essentially was lovely and so pleased when I achieved the top marks. As mentioned before the only issue I ever had was the change in skills coach as this did change twice throughout the year.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • It has given me a lot general business knowledge which has come in handy, however the best thing is it allowed me to research my own company The AA in detail. This was great as I was relatively new to the business when starting my course. It improved my ability to communicate and reach out to different areas in the business to understand what they do and has helped me make good business relationships that I build on each day. It has given me experience in HR which has led to a permanent opportunity in HRSS in admin.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • I am a member of The AA social committee and I am in charge of updating and improving our website on the employee intranet. This is something that maybe at the start of my course I wouldn't have typically done, however after making good colleague relationships and building on my confidence I enjoy this very much.

  • 9a. Would you recommend The AA to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • The AA was really my first ever office job experience, I started in summer in 2018 and am still loving it now. I learn something new everyday and am always kept on my toes working here which I love! I feel that everyone I cross paths with are always friendly and seem to go out of their way to help. HR especially is one big family that I think has only improved since I have been here. I have found a career that I could happily see myself doing for years to come and that was really only thanks to The AA and them being able to see my full potential!

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to The AA?
  • Just to try and grab everything available to you with both hands. The AA is always changing and innovating so it's important to keep up and move with it. I found that learning on the job was the best thing for me, getting thrown in at the deep end was the fastest way to learn. They welcome and support apprenticeships really well and there is so much praise for it in the business. Back to when I started and there were handfuls of apprentices and fast forward to now and that's all increased massively. Go for it!!
