  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • On my placement I have been assigned to the commercial team on a large scale construction project. From the start I was given the responsibility of updating the change trackers for all of the sub-contractors this then branched out to responding to early warnings, instructions and compensation events from sub-contractors. There are also a variety of different tasks that I have been given which broadens my knowledge even further.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have learnt many new skills in my first year regarding new programmes/systems that are used in the workplace. I have also developed many skills such as communication and how to effectively use, as well as team work and presenting skills. All of which are a necessity in the industry.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • The programme has been very enjoyable and has led to me making many new friends, all of which have a very similar mindset and I can see lasting a very long time. The college blocks allow the apprentices to enjoy themselves provided all work is done to the best standards.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The level of organisation is very clear from the start. I was informed as to when my first college block was and where the accommodation was. From there we are regularly updated with plenty of time as to where our placements were, their length and when we would be back.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • The support that I have received is great, everyone is provided with the equipment that we need and accommodation for the college blocks as well as an allowance for if you have to move away on site. Those in charge of the programme show a very high level of dedication and care to all apprentices.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • Similarly to the employer the training provider offers a huge amount of support when it comes to gaining the qualifications. All of the lecturers that I had when at Leeds college of building worked very hard to present classes, mark work and offer extra help when somebody asked for it. Overall it made gaining the qualifications very easy.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • From the first year college block it has given me a good overview and introduction to the construction industry which I know will only become more and more in depth over the years. Without this first qualification I would be a lot more confused and unaware of what I needed to do in my role on my site placement.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • Whilst on the college block there were a range of sports for apprentices to get involved with and at work there are numerous networking events and social activities. Many teams at work will organise their own social events and will always include the apprentices as to get to know them better. Furthermore, there are loads of apprenticeship events that get forwarded to us that we are able to attend.

  • 9a. Would you recommend BAM to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • I have actually recommended this apprenticeship to three of my friends for many reasons. Firstly, the organisation of the programme is great and with that it lessens the pressure that you would get with other apprenticeships. Secondly, you are with loads of other apprentices so you can help each other out which once again lessens the pressure and allows you to still experience the student life to an extent when on the college blocks. Finally, during the entire scheme you are learning and preparing for a good career which will set people up for life.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BAM?
  • If you are applying to BAM Nuttall and attend one of the interview days make sure that you are vocal and demonstrate good leadership, group and teamwork skills. The programme looks for individuals that are very effective in communication as it plays a key role in the industry. If this career path is something that you do want to do then definitely prioritise BAM as your number one choice.
