  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • my current job roll includes looking for, and designing improvements on manufacturing equipment. These improvements must be beneficial to the company either for profitable reasons or for the health and well being of employees. Planned and unplanned maintenance activities. Monitoring equipment for signs of wear. During the apprenticeship different rolls are taken through out to give a well rounded experience on different forms of, plants and packing lines.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Yes, I have developed electrical and mechanical skills, such as using machines like lathes and milling machines. These are used to give precise finishes to components. I have also developed in my self confidence and working in a team, this is big for me personally as I am quite shy.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • Each day is different so is always interesting, this make the programme enjoyable. I also enjoy learning about future projects as the development and change in technology is interesting. The engineering team I work with are very helpful and the moral around the workshop is usually happy. The company look after us and send us on trips such as outward bound where we meet other apprentices.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The program is fairly well structured in terms of the company, however sometimes the college would let us down due to lectures being ill and no one being there to replace them this only happened occasionally however. Support is good from the apprentice mentors at the college and in work.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • There are lots of people within and outside of the factory that are willing to help you with any questions you have. They will always back apprentices and help them with in the factory and college. There are a number of apprentice leaders that can be turned too as well as factory leaders or fellow engineers.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • Most of the time the college provide good support however sometimes during busy times in college it can be hard to find a tutor with the time to help. Other than that the support we receive is good. I'm currently not in college for a year however so it may well have changed, through feedback from previous years.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • In all honesty, I feel like the qualification was more of a confidence boost when going into factory, as in it was good to know basic things and helped me settle more comfortably in the factory. I feel like most of my useful knowledge has been given to me through experienced engineers and doing the job hands on, that's what makes it enjoyable in my opinion.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • There's a team day once a year, and Microsoft teams but I rarely use that. Most social event I've been to have been organised within the engineering team themselves. However in the first and second year all engineering and manufacturing apprentices go on outward bound which is a good laugh.

  • 9a. Would you recommend Unilever to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • Its a very well known and great company that looks after employees, also gives benefits such as Bupa and share save. Also its so big and diverse there is lots of different career paths you could take through engineering or r and d, and a great way to get qualifications whilst getting paid.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Unilever?
  • I think the most important thing is being able to show you want it during an interview, and to be yourself. Come across polite and talk about hobbies that could be linked to the job for example I talked about classic cars, this will help show you already have some skills required for the job.
