  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • Supporting other teams and the project providing support and infrastructure solutions. This is through using a range of tools and programs for an enterprise level system. This is in a live production environment, and gives opportunities to work with a range of individuals and clients on a daily basis on a range of different tasks.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • The new skills picked up are primarily from on the job experience, learning from experience colleagues and team members to solve issues. Moreover, the opportunity to do my own research allows me to solve my own issues, complementing the topics learnt in university. There is also the opportunity to do other courses of interest to aid personal development.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • The programme is a great opportunity from all aspects. The academic aspect from university allows the theory to be learnt and studied. Moreover, there is also the work aspect in a great company with a good culture with individuals who are happy to help. Lastly, there is a network of other apprentices and graduates with regular social events.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • There is plenty of support both from within CGI and inside the university. This allows for good communication between the two and there is good communication with any issues that arise. Moreover, there are mentors within the company to aid with issues and help with personal development to ensure structure and good organisation.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • As the employer is so large, there is a dedicated HR department to solve issues. There is also plenty of communication and support from mentors and line managers ensuring any issues can be resolved and necessary support put in place along with reviews throughout the year. This also happens with the university.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • The qualifications include the degree and the apprenticeship qualification. The points that have to be covered are provided by the employer depending on the course being studied, so to ensure that the proper support is provided. Moreover, with other qualifications such as programming or project management, these can be organised through work.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • There are many modules studied which are beneficial during work. These are studied in detail to learn the theory and can then be brought into the workplace to be practised. This is beneficial because it forms a solid foundation in order to build from and put into practise what is learnt.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • There is a large network of apprentices, graduates and industry placement students. There are many internal and external company events along with the sports and social club in which there is opportunities to socialise with other members. This is available across all offices and locations, with other events such as breakfast mornings, etc available.

  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • There are so many opportunities in the company for self development and so many roles which can be chosen from dependant on what an individual is interested in. Moreover, there are a lot of social events and a great company culture with many other individuals and colleagues who are happy to help .


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to CGI?
  • Ensure you demonstrate a genuine passion for whatever it is you are applying for, and make sure your actions show this. It's best to relax and answer the questions with good examples to show any key competencies you think they would be looking for. The interviews are a great opportunity to find out about the company too with any questions.
