  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I work with a team to help to develop software based on a clients specification and design. This involves programming and testing software (doing basic unit tests as we go to make sure its working ) this in my case is in the front end of the stack although there are lots of options for future change in career.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Since joining CGI I have learned more about programming in the whole of the stack. Moreover I have learned how to code in more languages while developing my knowledge in existing languages, how to test my code to insure it functions as intended and how to work with a team in a office environment.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • Overall I thoroughly enjoyed my apprenticeship. The company has taught me more about software developing and given me the chance to gain qualifications and training while backing it up with real life experience. The company encourages lots of social events to get to know the whole office so that working there is very enjoyable.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The course allows for a flexible structure, the exams and coursework are not at a fixed time. For example once I had finished my course training. While I was working the exams were done when I was ready, other apprentices did their exams earlier or later depending on there personal knowledge. Though the course is structured so I always knew what was happening.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • My employer gave me lots of support in a range of forms. I had regular communication with different managers not just to check my work but to check how I was doing and how they could better help me. This could be in the form of further training resources or additional support with a task.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • The training provider had resources that have used with many years successfully. For the most part I was well prepared for my exams and I had regular contact and support throughout the course for coursework or additional help for exams. While at times I thought that the resources were not that useful they do try to improve.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • Overall the training provided gave me knowledge and understanding that helped me to learn the basics of my job although the qualification does not give me everything I needed to do my job it did help quite well and my employer provided more support or training when needed to make sure I could perform as best as I could.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • At my employer they provide working together events to get to know more people in my office, moreover they provide a optional sports and social club to spend time with others in the office trying new sports or other fun events to improve moral and to overall have more fun.

  • 9a. Would you recommend CGI to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • Overall I have thoroughly enjoyed my time here and I intend on staying here for a long time. They provide lots of support and opportunities for developing your career and they provide a great working environment to enjoy your day. Lots of the people I work with have been with CGI for a long time and I think this speaks to how good a employer they are.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to CGI?
  • I would recommend that you do your research on the course to check that it is right for you, if it is then it will be obvious when you have your interview that you want to be there. Moreover do your research on the company and the role you want and how you want to progress your career.
