  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • It can change depending on what project, but it will consist of checking emails and communications and hitting targets by doing a certain number of cases in your project. We will feed metrics back to more senior personnel and this will be taken on board to potentially improve the method of practice or training. There is often a large element of quality checking and quality assurance across all projects.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have developed a new skill in my written communication within a professional environment, this is something I will use every day whether that be to ask questions or respond to email. Reflection and the receiving of feedback is something I have improved and have learnt is a very important skills to have as there is a high feedback culture in the company and strives for improvements in working practices. I have learnt to support a team but within constraints with my responsibilities, and this has helped me be a better team player and what I can do independently to help the team as a whole. I have learnt about business management from my degree. I have learnt how to go about talking to clients in a training session provided.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I do love my program, as I feel equal to my peers despite being an apprentice and see there no difference in the way I am treated. The support with have around the program and managing the uni and work life is great as we have counsellors who have undertaken this program as well and can give advice from their own experience. I am able to develop my learning in a safe and understanding environment. My peers on the course also help me and we help each other. I enjoy the work.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The programme is extremely structured, through experience with previous years and the knowledge that the company has around the programme as well as the level of influence with the provider to make sure that everything is made easy for us to get on with our academic work and our project work. There is a good communication route from work to the university and anything raised is sorted in quick time.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • My employer is amazing with support, with the counsellor system in place I have someone to talk to regarding anything whether that be working life, academic side or personal life. As I've mentioned the employer wants to continuously improve through the experience of its apprentices and feeds this back to uni or to improve the processes in place at work. Every apprentice is given support with this and there is a large group of apprentices all in the same position so it is easy to talk with them.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • There is support if needed, but it can feel like they do not understand with have limited time with our full time jobs sometimes. The uni is quick to respond to feedback though and a discussion will be carried out, although I'm not sure how this has been actioned in most cases.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • The degree is far to broad to help performance for the work we do, as the company is so large its rare we will be involved with marketing or sales or HR, which are topics covered in the qualification. There are some pointless tasks and topics that I feel I will never use. However there is a key emphasis on reflection and this helps improve my overall character in different environments including workplace

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • There is sports teams and a few social events throughout the year although for professional networking or seminars these are often organised to be during the day and it is often discouraged to go to these as project work is so highly regarded. It will often mean this time will have to be worked back even though it is furthering the professional and can often help improve work, this is a very negative thing for me as I would want to be involved in these events and learn more about the topics however feel I would be looked down on if I went.

  • 9a. Would you recommend EY to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • The opportunities are great, they value your work and you as an asset as an employee and they are always trying to improve, this suits someone going for a degree apprenticeship who wants to improve and gain experience. The great qualifications I can get as well as the experience is like no other apprenticeship I could find and the support is great for someone moving away from home for the first time.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to EY?
  • Make sure to make an impression with your true personality as diversity is key in the company and they take on so many different people so there is no need to pretend your something your not. The main tip is do your research on the company and make sure it suits you and make sure you know what their values are as it is something so prominent in the company
