  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • As a mechanical engineer on the graduate scheme I undertake a series of placements lasting approximately 3-6 months over a two year duration. My placements generally revolve around fluid flow, thermodynamics and structural engineering related work; as well as the occasional project management related role. I find my work extremely interesting and feel like I am making a positive contribution to the company as a whole on a daily basis.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Since my time on the scheme I have developed a number of skills, all of which largely revolve around engineering competencies highlighted by the UK-SPEC. In summary, these range from a series of technical, project management and interpersonal people skills. I have also enhanced my knowledge using a number of software packages including computer aided design, finite element analysis and computational fluid dynamics related work.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I thoroughly enjoy my job and the graduate scheme in which I enrolled on. Rotational placements have allowed me to get a greater appreciation of the business as a whole and how it operates. I have also gained invaluable experience and a wealth of contacts during my time. That being said, I am looking to a more permanent and fixed role upon its completion.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The graduate scheme I enrolled on was generally quite flexible. I was allowed a degree of freedom to pick and choose my placements based on my areas of interest. That being said there was some oversight from my engineering manager to ensure I developed the skills expected of an experienced mechanical engineer.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • Throughout the scheme I received regular support from my employer and manager. I have regular meetings with my skills coach and chartered mentor to ensure I am on track and progressing towards becoming a chartered mechanical engineer. The early careers team also send out regular emails detailing events and mandatory health and well-being meetings.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • Cranfield University offer regular drop-in sessions after completing a training module for any questions and queries we have related to the assignment. Although I have never actually emailed the lecturer directly we are informed that they are available if we have any pressing issues that cannot wait till the drop-in sessions.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • The qualification is postgraduate degree in engineering competence. Despite helping me as a well-rounded engineer I do not think it particularly benefits my role as a mechanical engineer. A lot of the modules and topics discussed were previously covered during my masters at a different university. As such I would not say the content covered by Cranfield University particularly helps me in my role.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • We regularly receive emails and updates from the early careers team about 'stretch' activities and events we can get involved in. Generally these activities allow us to develop skills we would not get to in our day-to-day roles and so can be particularly beneficial. Most of the stretch activities I get involved in revolve around STEM.

  • 9a. Would you recommend BAE Systems to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • BAE Systems is a very reputable company within the UK Defence sector and I believe they support their employees in progressing both on a professional and personal level. I get to work on complex and advanced engineering technologies on a daily basis and challenge my usual way of thinking. They have a good benefits scheme and know how to make their employees feel appreciated.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BAE Systems?
  • Do your research on both the job role and the business unit that you are applying to (e.g. air, maritime, land, electronics, cyber security etc). Knowing the recent developments of the business and showcasing your knowledge of the product shows a genuine interest in the company and your willingness to learn.
