  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • My role as an apprentice is to maintain and fit electrical work to the warships of the navy. This can include things like fitting cables, changing circuit breakers, maintaining transformers and many other interesting things. I learn these skills from shadowing a mentor as they teach me each component and job.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have learnt many skills since starting including my hand tool skills like being able to hacksaw and file. also I have learnt a lot about electrical principles and how electricity works. I have also developed my skills with working with older people as I came straight from school and am used to only working with people my age so working day to day with adults has helped me gain confidence with speaking to a wider range of people.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • our program is well organised in the sense of you know where to go and what you will be doing. you also will get a good structured system to learn by getting an equally balanced amount of theory and practical to help you learn what you will need at the end of your apprenticeship.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I have many people I can go to for support. it starts with your mentor by going to them for help and if they cannot help you, you would then go to your team leader for help or advice on the matter. if for an unlikely reason they still cannot help you, you would then go to your head of trade who will for sure figure it out for you. you also have a safeguarding officer so if you have any private problems you may go to them for help.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • when learning you will receive plenty of help from your mentor who you shadow when learning your practical skills. you also have a mentor who you go to to help make sure all of your theory side is going well and up to date. you get theory lessons as well from instructors of the topic.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • The qualification that I am getting helps me to perform better in my role because there isn't many places at all in the country that know how to train marine engineering. so gaining these specific skills that you wont find anywhere else is essential to be able to do what you will need to do in your job.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • their is always many social events to do in our apprenticeship such as the apprentice ball that took place. this was a formal event that took place with just apprentices in bae and it was hosted at a hotel where we got to drink and dance together. there is also a Christmas work doo every year which is always good fun. you also tend to go out with your work team once a month for activities.

  • 9a. Would you recommend BAE Systems to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • I would recommend bae systems to a friend because I believe it is a very good apprenticeship as it offers plenty of skills with a good working evnviroment and also a very good wage for someone gaining a qualification. it also isn't like any other because you get to work on navy ships which no where else can do.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BAE Systems?
  • the tips I would give to joining bae is make sure when applying you are well prepared, have a good attitude, make sure you do some research into the company and know what you are applying for, have good time and attendance kepping as that is a very important thing within bae systems and most importantly make sure you are confident.
