1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

I am a software engineer apprentice at Thales in Cheadle. I am part of a scrum team of developers working on an autonomous based project. Each day I use JIRA software to track my current tasks and provide updates on which tasks need to be completed.

2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

I have learnt lots since starting. Before Thales I had only done programming in college so I was pretty new still! I have been paired with a senior colleague who has helped me developed my skills and learn new programming languages.

3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

I think it is a very good programme. I always wanted to gain a degree but was more interested in getting the valuable work experience from working in a large company like Thales.

4. How well organised/structured is your programme?

I think the programme is rather well structured. It could be slightly improved with clearer communication and information from early careers team. However, this is something that is being done with the new committee.

5. How much support do you receive from your employer?

I receive all the support I need. I know I can ask for extra time to work on assignments if required and they are very understanding. They want me to gain the best degree classification possible.

6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

There is support from my provider. I meet with tutors weekly/fortnightly to discuss progress and they are there to help with questions.

7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

I think the qualification gives me the base skills to perform in my role. I think this along with on the job training will help me develop most successfully.

8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

There are lots of things you can get involved in at work. It depends on what you are into. There’s often nights out arranged with help everyone socialise together.

Yes

9b. Why?

It is a good company to work for, they support you in your studies and being a large company should help for future progression and mobility within your career.

10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Thales?

The application process can be daunting however take your time with applying and answer the questions as best as possible. Assessment centres may be difficult but everyone there is thinking the same so try to relax.
