  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I am currently studying for a Foundation Degree Nursing Associate Position. I engage with patients day to day carrying out wound care management and office based tasks e.g. writing emails, answering phone calls, documenting via system one on patient records with the District Nursing Team

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • My confidence and courage has enhanced compared to my previous role which was 111 Call Handling, I am face to face with patients and also engaging with their family, relatives and carers. I have developed my communication and people skills. I have learnt how to perform wound care management effectively to aid recovery and improving quality of life. I have learnt how to navigate system one to locate patient details on their records.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I enjoy the apprenticeship programme as it allows he to find a work life balance. I get paid to work whilst I study towards a foundation degree so I have the benefits of a full time job on completion and getting to know my colleagues that I will be working with in future.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • In the beginning my programme was very disorganised with no structure as the course leader had just left prior to my cohort starting the apprenticeship. We also change from Health Education England to NMC regulations which entailed some changed to our Practice Assessment Document. Currently we are on track with out course structure, learning and placement dates.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I receive an adequate amount of support from my employer. Day to day our caseload changes so some days can be busy in which it can be hard to sit down and discuss, other days are more quiet in which we can schedule in some time to reflect on what I have been learning so far.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • We receive an adequate amount of support from our training providers at the university. They ensure that we are learning exactly what we are going out in the community to practice. So we are able to link what we learn in theory to practice. We also get given blended learning to complete to keep up to date with knowledge

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • There are various extra curricular activities to get involved with at the university. However at my place of work, we have team get together's, Christmas parties and fundraising events e.g. skydiving and charity runs. We also get a discounted gym membership and access to various discounted activities seasonally.

  • 9a. Would you recommend NHS to a friend?
  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • The NHS need as much workforce as possible to continuously improve quality of life and to keep healthcare going. NHS provide loads of opportunities for progression and opportunities worldwide. As an apprentice we receive maximum support to ensure we have the knowledge as well as the practical skills to be competent.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to NHS?
  • To take a look at what service or specialism you may have an interest in prior to applying. Take a look at the career paths and what route you may wish to take e.g. apprenticeship, degree route or applying for the actual post and working your way up.
