  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • Working in various placement areas across BARTS as work based learning apprentice whereby I work along side my designated supervisors to carry out clinical roles to achieve set targets set out by the apprentice nursing associate course. Other placements are more knowledge based as mental health units. There I am required to learn about the mental health behaviours, write reports on individual cases and carry out mental health examinations.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have learnt many skills such as delivering various medication as well learning its uses and side effects. I have learnt other skills such as carrying out manual blood pressure readings as well as updated moving and handling techniques. I have also leant more about the NHS code of conduct and how to apply it through out my shift.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I enjoy the help and support I am getting from the university to achieve my set goals and targets. The teachers are very friendly and welcoming and also provide that extra support and motivation I needed to complete my objectives. In my placement areas my supervisors are also very supportive to achieve my clinical skills objectives.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The programme was well organised. The placement areas with all the dates was given out during the start of the year for the whole year so it was reassuring to know where I'd be working for the whole year. The classroom lectures was well planned to support us well.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • My line manager supported me well whenever I needed something written in my report or put me through other mandatory courses. She has provided me help throughout the course and whenever I have emailed her regarding anything she would get back to me promptly. My employer has given me many opportunities to practice my skills.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • I have received alot of help from my university. They have given me the knowledge and skills through their careful planning and well structured lesson plan. They have also provided me support outside lesson times through emails and drop in sessions for additional help. Emails are usual read and reied back quickly for help.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • It has given me the knowledge and skills to put knowledge into practice. It has given me a guideline and rules to follow to give patients the best possible care. It has allowed me to put my patients first and follow standards and protocols better. It has given me the training I needed experience caring for patients from various conditions.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • There are various sports activities cuch as the barts football team and swimming classes provided in the barts health websites. This is something I was really interested in talking part. I have also seen some gym classes provided by the Trust along with yoga classes which is a good to keep fit.

  • 9a. Would you recommend NHS to a friend?
  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • The support and benefit the Trust provides is exceptional. They always provide support for career support and progression. They also provide good training programmes for those seeking to gain extra skills outside their job roles. This gives the NHS a very appealing company to work for and build your career.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to NHS?
  • Think carefully before joining a role within the NHS. There are various departments and career paths within the NHS which may suit your individual needs and interest. The experience will give you a better understanding of how you will like to progress in the future. There are many training programmes which are ideal for your partially skill.
