  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • My role involves the setting out safely of cones, signs and barriers in accordance with the street works act to enable us to work safely on our roads and foot-ways which involves flagging, kerbing carriageway and foot-way patching. My role also involves ensuring that all relevant paperwork relating to the safety of the jobs is filled in correctly and on time.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • in my role as a highways operative apprentice i have developed the skills to Flagging - Excavating - preparing ground - laying mortar bed - laying flags - pointing Tarmacing - excavating - preparing ground - laying tarmac - using vibrating plate Barriers - checking drawings and GPRS results before any excavating takes place. - dig holes - installing new barriers using lines and levels.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I enjoy my programme as i have learned how to communicate with members of the public. learned how to work as a team and also as an individual as and when necessary . As part of the programme i have attended a number of health and safety courses which is vital in this line of work.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The programme is organised and structured well i work 4 days per week on site and 1 day per week in college studying. I am always informed and kept up to date with any courses and any changes to my work through tool box talks and also on site visits on a weekly basis

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I always receive a lot of support from my employer works operations manager Brian Murphy as well as my supervisors and my colleges in my team. all of them are constantly encouraging and supporting me on a daily basis and are always there if i need to ask anything of them

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • I attend college every Tuesday where i receive all the support i need during my college day. outside of college i am updated by my supervisors if college need anything from me. once a month a supervisor and myself are visited by member of Liverpool Community College for an appraisal.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • During my day at Liverpool community college i learn the theory side of my job this would include - Depth and formations of various types of roads Correct tools to use for the specific jobs How to correctly inter prate drawings which i put into practice in my job I believe that these have helped me to perform better in my job role.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • We are a close knit team and all get along well with each other. we have arranged a trip to the races , we also have a gym close by which some of us attend together, in may we are doing a charity born survivor obstacle course with all funds raised going to local charity's within the borough.

  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • I would recommend tarmac to a friend as it is a great company to work for. I have developed many skills which I never thought i would be able to do this time 2 years ago. I receive constant support from management as well as my colleagues on a daily basis which makes working for tarmac a better place.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Tarmac?
  • In my experience Tarmac has been a great company to work for. always be punctual listen carefully on assessment days and training courses as i have found this has helped greatly in my job. take any opportunities on offer as tarmac are a company which like to promote from within. so there is a great opportunity to progress if you are willing.
