  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I carry out Electrical maintenance on the underground. This involves various tasks day to day. From maintaining lights within the underground tube network to servicing Traction control switches (power supply for the train tracks). I also do what would be considered as more general electrical work. such as lighting circuit installations, and much more.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have learned a trade/ skillset of which I can take with me all around the world, not limiting me to one company. I have been on various courses both internal and external across the last three years, of which some I have actually requested to be put on myself. so they are happy to facilitate my desires.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I thoroughly enjoyed the apprenticeship. Like many other big companies, things do not always run too smoothly and can be frustration. However, there is a good amount of support from certain managers along with the trade union who help ensure you are not being mistreated by the company. Friends are easily made and a lot of people want to help.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The apprenticeship was very well structured in the first year. Everything was organised and things would happen as promised. In the second year, the apprenticeship took a bit of a dive as I had been put on the wrong courses to get me to where I want to be. I spent a long time fixing the mistakes made so that in the final year I would get the necessary qualification.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • We receive as much support as your willing to accept. There are countless departments and schemes set up, in order to support employees to the fullest. This ranging from occupational health visits both mental and physical, to various schemes such as Ride to work which will help you purchase a bicycle. This promotes a healthy lifestyle as well as reducing carbon footprint.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • I was appointed a mentor, of who would support me on my placements both with the paperwork but also with the on job training. We would work together and with others, which was nice having a familiar face. Managers are always happy to help and I was also appointed an apprentice support manager. who would help with more wellbeing in and out of work, ensuring my confidence within the company and generally just getting me through the apprenticeship.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • Sadly the courses I was put on initially were not correct for the route of progression that I intended to go down. Once the correct courses were taken and successfully completed, I found that the additional knowledge was very helpful in carrying ou tmy daily task , and general expansion of my knowledge.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • I frequently get emails and newsletters regarding networking events also events where you help younger minds and others going through similar career paths as my self. Everyone in the department is invited to the Christmas drinks and other activities. I sadly have not has the chance for any of these yet as I am still focusing all my time on bettering myself.
