The role included maintenance and faultfinding tasks throughout various plant areas at the site. Tasks were primarily around lookiing after plant instrumentation but also covered areas of Networks, Communications, Computer Hardware and Software / Programming. Each area was quite different meaning a wide range of knowledge / experience was achieved.
Throughout the apprenticeship I have learnt many new skills. This includes various maintenance activities and calibrating instruments. I have also developed the ability to write software programs and create webpages to show critical business information to the relevant users. As well as practical skills, I was able to expand my theoretical knowldge through various training courses and further education that the company has put me through.
I have throroughly enjoyed the apprenticeship programme. I was always motivated and interested to come to work to learn something new. I also was fortunate that everyone I worked with were very helpful and was always keen to help me develop new skilsl and expand my knowledge of various processes.
The programme was very organised and was structured very clearly. The work placement areas was decided well in advance but were flexible around any training courses that came up. All training was scheduled and clearly explained at an early time to ensure everyone would be available for the training periods.
My employer was always keen to support my training throughout the apprenticeship and even afterwards. I felt like the company always supported my decision to further improve myself through training courses and / or further education. My employer would also bring attention to training courses that I may have missed out on otherwise.
Whilst working towards qualifications I was always comfortable to seek advice from my training provider as they were always more than happy to support me in any way possible. Additional training was also beneficial and tended to link quite well with other training that I received during the duration of the programme.
My qualification helped improve my effectiveness and understanding of completing day to day tasks. As well as acquiring on the job experience, the education allowed me to get a good grasp of the theory behind each task. The qualification also helped me gain a grounding in areas of work that I didn't expect to be doing.
There are always extra-curricular activieis going on and the company does a good job in relaying this informaion. This is usually done through emails so everyone can see but this information is also cascaded out throughout departments locally to ensure anyone without email access does not miss out on any opportunities.
Yes
I would recommend Tata Steel to a friend because I have thrououghly enjoyed my time here and feel that I have been pushed to the best of my abilities. The company has a great work environment and has helped me gain skills in a wide range of areas making me comfortable that I will have a bright future.
My advice to anyone else applying to Tata Steel would be to go in with an open mind as I underestimated just how varied the work can be which has been a big benefit because I have developed skills in areas I didn't know existed that I thoroughly enjoy.
