  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • As a Cyber Security consultant, I look at various risks, vulnerabilities and threats in a platform including: how they would be exploited and how to mitigate these threats. I have recurring tasks such as maintaining a risk register and other tasks which are given to me when and where they become available

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Yes, working at CGI helps gain many soft skills, not just skills that are required for completing your job but skills you need to progress in your career - such as networking. CGI are extremely supportive in encouraging us to take additional courses and exams to improve our skills and gain experience.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • The program is very enjoyable. The fact that it's possible to leave school and go straight into a job with little to no experience is an amazing opportunity for a school leaver who knows what they want to do. My days at CGI are never the same, filled with a range of interesting and exciting tasks

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The programme is very well structured on the CGI side with plenty of support and encouragement from managers and buddies. The University lacked structure to begin with but it has improved as the year has gone on. Overall, the structure is good and effective for ensuring that we get the experience and knowledge we require

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • As much or as little support as I need. It depends on the person. Upon joining CGI, we were assigned a Buddy, a line manager and a people manager. These are all people who can help when you're struggling. Often, they will let you get on with things until they think they need to step in and guide you in a new direction

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • The university is often supportive when we have problems and they come up with effective solutions. However, it is often difficult to get in contact with some members of the course and therefore it is better to speak to them when you see them. Replying to emails is something that the university are getting better at but it's still not quite there

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • Lessons at university help me understand what I'm actually doing at work. It often clears up questions that I have when I'm doing a task for my project. Additionally, learning at university provides me with the tools to take a different approach and view to various tasks at work.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • Plenty. CGI has the sports and social club (SSC) where they frequently put on events at a decreased cost for you and your colleagues. For example, they have been known to put on events such as Thorpe Park, Ascot races or just simply a meal at the local pub. It's a great opportunity to meet others within the company that you wouldn't usually meet
