  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • My role can be quite diverse. One day I could be pricing up an IKS service for a client or prepping a use case to present to Business Partners, alongside this are tasks such as running scrums, meet-ups and picking up any questions our clients have on the service we have provided.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I had minimum coding skills when I joined due to taking it at A-Level as well as advancing it in my own time but, I got the opportuinity to further these skills with the help and resources IBM has available. I got to practice on a real life client project!

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • The program and my job role go very nicely with each other which means the skills I learn from either the apprenticeship or my role are completely transferrable. Sometimes the workload can be a bit much but thanks to the help that’s always available to you I am able to work not only on my task but also my time management as well!

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • Our pathway wasn't fully defined when we joined but we were then facilitated incredibly well to make sure we had a good, well informed start in our careers and didn't fall behind compared to the others on different apprenticeships, it's been incredibly smooth and structured so far.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • More than enough. You are always given multiple people to seek help from whether it be you EPM, Task Manager, Buddies or even other colleagues. There has never been one point in my career where I have felt that I couldn't go to/ didn't have anyone to ask help from.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • The resources are basically available 24/7 as well as Action Learning Sets which help us get together and work as a team on the content we need to cover for our apprenticeship. We have an online learning portal which defines mandatory work to do as well as providing extra learning for us to do if we so wish to.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • As I have previously mentioned - my apprenticeship goes hand in hand very nicely with my job role. The skills and experience can almost always be applied to both, I know this may not be the case for everyone on my pathway but because the standard is quite wide in its scope you can almost always transfer skills from the apprenticeship into your job and vice versa.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • The foundation community is vibrant with extra activities and events for everyone to get involved in. I've got the opportunity to work alongside another apprentice and clients to put together a design thinking event which will hold real value to both the company and ourselves, something I didn't think I would be able to do this early on in my career.

  • 9a. Would you recommend IBM to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • It's not very often that you get a good qualification, a job you enjoy and a better than average salary which good permanent career prospects. I'm getting much more learning and experience for a much better price than if I went to university. I will have a good qualification in 2 years with zero debt and experience that will be invaluable.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to IBM?
  • Don't be put off by some of the application process! I am not the best with numbers, and I was out of my depths when it came to a numerical reasoning test. They're not looking at if you get the solution, they are looking for how you get to it - a key concept that you need to know for the whole process!
