  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • Within my apprenticeship I have worked in 3 roles, the most current being a DevOps Engineer role. This entails working with a small DevOps focused team - helping with investigation and development of new tools that the team will use. Along with this it focuses on understanding needs of requirements for developers and analysts.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have learnt a great amount of programming skills, this includes things like in depth Python skills, Java skills and others. I have also learnt a large amount about different cloud providers, this being the technical aspects of mainly Amazon Web Services. This includes technologies like CloudFormation, Lambda and Ec2.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I enjoy almost all work based aspects of my apprenticeship. However I do think that the course is in many ways pointless. Some of the aspects help my day to day however large amounts of the university work do not help at all and are needlessly wordy and long. This is not the fault of Unilever.,

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • Again, with work focused stuff I think the program is great - allowing me to greatly work towards being the technical worker that I am and giving me good possibilities to progress. But I think the structure of my study is lacking - while I am given work every week - it does not feel like it is really worth anything and a lot of it is filler content.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • So much, I work with a mentor and my manager on a fortnightly basis. This means that I can push towards trying new things and risking failure, instead of just sticking with all of what I should - overall I am super happy with my Manager and Mentor - but from the OU (Open University) I believe support and contact should be better.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • As answered previously I think that it is a okay system with the OU but contact should be more often. With my 'practice tutor' maybe organizing meetings more than once a quarter. I also feel what I mention to her has no real weight - as an example when I complain about aspects of my course I dislike or feel is too much I see no assistance or explanation.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • It does not at all. I feel this because learning about previous failures of the TAURUS move within the London Stock Exchange does not help me work better at planning as that case is so different to what I do. I personally feel the course should have module options and courses that I can chose to assist with work instead of what feels like filler content just to get my degree.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • Within work, I am co-lead and soon to be lead of our community outreach for apprenticeships. This allows me to build contacts within many companies and work towards learning more local areas and schools. This has also allowed me to build confidence and work towards talking in from of larger groups.

  • 9a. Would you recommend Unilever to a friend?
  • No

  • 9b. Why?
  • Not until they fix their issues with training providers, I would not recommend it at the moment. The schemes of work are great but the training lets them down greatly. I feel they do not listen to issues when I raise them and still use the same providers for new joiners.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Unilever?
  • I would recommend just being honest and down to earth in all stages of the process. It is a program that has its benefits and its flaws - some of its flaws are yet to be fixed but there is a lot of great experience to be had here. I really think the work is great and the scheme needs work so consider that upon applications.
