  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I work on new housing sites and run fibre underground from the local exchange building to the sites. The cable that comes from the exchange goes into a splitter node then from there goes into a CBT that then goes to the customers house and supplies the customer some broadband

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Yes, I have learnt how to carry out multiple daily duties that I didn't know how to do before which has helped in doing things outside of work. The skills I've learnt are valuable skills to carry across from work to doing daily things around the house that help out.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I enjoy the practical much more than the theory work. Practical is hands on that's where I believe you truly learn how to do your job, whereas theory seems like a lot of corporate stuff that you don't really use that often in day to day life unfortunately.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • Pretty well structured. I enjoy having the study days to catch up with work that you have to do but I don't enjoy the quantity of work we have to do sometimes feels like a bit of a pressurised situation especially when you don't have the time to catch up on days off etc.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • Depends on who you speak to, I think everyone means well but some people rather than others don't have great people skills and don't approach certain situations in the correct way in my opinion but at the end of the day everybody is different so there's always that.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • Quite a bit, I feel sometimes there can be cases of favouritism to some extend when it comes to marking work, sometimes I feel I've submitted suitable work that can be used for my NVQ for it to only be put back to me to redo and submit again.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • Sometimes, a lot of the work we do for the qualification is really just learning about policies and health and safety stuff which is good to know about in case of certain situations happening but its not often that those situations happen enough. All in all though its a great qualification to have.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • Yes sometimes, we have some sort of internal social networking but it seems its used more to show off the work you've done or criticise someone else's work rather than actually having a conversation with some of your other colleagues. There are days out that you can attend to certain bt buildings etc.

  • 9a. Would you recommend BT to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • Fantastic company to work for with opportunities to progress, all of my colleagues that I work with I get on really well with and I enjoy the work I carry out on a day to day basis its really enjoyable and you feel like you've achieved something at the end of the day.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BT?
  • Be honest in your interviews and make sure your both a team player and also someone who can work on there own, there's a lot of travelling to do but its good because you get to see lots of places you would never think of seeing before if you didn't do it.
