  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I have daily disciplines to help maintain the workshop housekeeping. Then I work with a mentor, who teaches me, and guides me into maintenance, diagnostics and repairs on HGV's. I also have to maintain college work, and gain evidence for my portfolio of work, which is checked and signed off by my training coordinator.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Very much, I have learnt a lot concerning HGV's and components. Also with regards legislation surrounding this industry and vehicles in general. The complexity of the vehicles means that computer diagnostic equipment is required to communicate with the vehicles, and I am learning a lot about this communication path, and how to interpret codes that the vehicle may give.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • The program is excellent. Both at the dealership and at the School of Excellence in Bristol. I am finding all aspects enjoyable, and I have a great relationship with my work colleagues and other apprentice technicians. I have a good 'Home -stay' experience with good food and comfortable room, which is important to me.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • At the start there was a lack of guidance at the depot, due to poor management. But since that time, and with direction given by the new manager, I feel that a good path is now formed and I can see clearly the way to success, and improvement. I am looking forward to progressing to the next stage in the program.

  • A lot of support is given by both the depot, and [This section of the comment has been removed by a member of the RateMyApprenticeship Team because it did not meet our site terms and conditions], the Apprentice Coordinator. This is shown in review meetings at the depot, and by regular meetings with [This section of the comment has been removed by a member of the RateMyApprenticeship Team because it did not meet our site terms and conditions]. Imperial Commercials have strong links with all apprentices in the network, and we are all valued, and our views and thoughts help to make our apprenticeship program grow. Imperial Commercials are setting up Apprentice Council groups which will help us all share our thoughts and ideas.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • Very good input from the training providers. Regular meetings are held at the depot with Training Coordinators, and they help in getting us towards our goals and aims. I have a good relationship with my training coordinator, and I know I can ask him for help and assistance in making sure my college work, and targets in work experience are met.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • This gives me the knowledge to carry out tasks on vehicles. Helps me to understand why the repairs are being carried out, and why and how certain components are required to be changed. It also gives me an insight into how the vehicle works and how there is an order to the way vehicles work with parts and areas that interlink to make the vehicles efficient, and user friendly.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • I have been to many Skills shows, where I have helped promote Apprenticeships for Imperial Commercials and DAF Trucks. I have also been chosen as an Apprentice Ambassador for Imperial Commercials, and have recently undertaken a filming role to promote the National Apprentice week. We are also embarking on a 'Wolf Run' for charity in the summer, which should be both challenging, rewarding and fun.

  • 9a. Would you recommend MOTUS Commercials to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • Imperial Commercials are a very 'go-ahead' company, and realise that Apprentices are a very important part in continuation of its evolvement. Especially an Apprenticeship with the backing of the number 1 truck franchise, DAF. I know that with my qualifications when fished, I have a very good and secure future career, and I know I can achieve great success with Imperial Commercials.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to MOTUS Commercials?
  • Be Open minded, the course may seem long, but it goes very quickly. Which shows that I am enjoying it immensely. I would honestly recommend the Apprentice program at Imperial Commercials, and it has helped me see different aspects of a Business, and the people that make the depot so great. I know that Imperial Commercials Apprenticeship is highly prized and I hope my contributions to the program help keep Imperial Commercials at the forefront of this acclaimed Apprenticeship.
