  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • Chasing people up to review drawings for RKD. Aid with the management with hoists. Go on site to check that that drawings have been built correctly. Assist with pre-pour inspections. Attend University - one day a week Distribute relevant emails. Manage the temporary steps meetings and take photos on site for it.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • My time management skills have improved as I need to work around meetings, site visits, university etc. My presentation skills have also developed as I have given a presentation to my college about my route into mace and why I chose an apprenticeship over going to university or getting a full time job.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I enjoy my programme as I think it has a nice balance of work, time to myself and multiple opportunities to grow. I feel like I have made the right decision to take up an apprenticeship compared to the other routes as I feel like I am gaining the most out of my placement and uni.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • I like how I have day release to university and have training sessions every now and then as it gives me enough time and break to focus on certain aspects of my role. For example I feel like I am able to apply what I learn from my training sessions to my work e.g. working at height.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I know if I have any issues or concern I feel like there is at least one person to go to, to either resolve the issue or to get help. Both my buddy and line manager are friendly and supportive, I feel like I can ask them anything whether that's work related or about my personal life.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • I have one teacher who I feel like could give us more material leading up to exam periods to give a rough idea what to expect as this is my first year in uni. Overall I feel like there is support, everything can be found online and I know I can email my teachers and get a response fairly quickly.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • Studying civil engineering at university allows me to apply what I learn on site e.g. surveying and materials. Now I know more about concrete, when going on a concrete pour I have a better understanding of why things are done, e.g. the consistency of the mixture due to the mold.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • There are opportunities to get involved with other events like marathons, Christmas parties, blood giving, cinema trips. I like having the freedom to choose different events that may not be related to work but give me an opportunity to get to try different things and meet new people, with or within MACE.

  • 9a. Would you recommend Mace to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • Great opportunity to expand knowledge and apply it to your given project. The fact that I study and work at the same time works both hand in hand as one helps the other. Good company to start your career into, opportunities to grow and understand your chosen career path e.g. civil engineering or project management.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Mace?
  • Be yourself, ensure you know the role you are applying to, having work experience helps, don't expect to know and learn everything at once as there is so much to take in. If you want something done, you have to go out and make it happen. It looks good on you as others are willing to see you are proactive
