  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • As a level 3 Warehousing and Storage apprentice, I am being trained on a daily basis by deputy managers within the warehouse on how to complete their job role. Daily tasks involve running the intake desks which is where the external drivers approach with their delivery paperwork, giving instructions to drivers about which bays need to be used and what they need to do once their delivery is unloaded and also signing the drivers paperwork when the delivery has been booked in. I also book in the produce stock, bread and flowers using a scanner. Once stock is booked in, I use a walkie talkie to communicate with the other deputies. My responsibilities are to arrive to work on time, wearing the correct uniform and PPE. I need to make sure each staff member has signed the truck safety sheet and also the break sheet showing times of when they had their first and second break. I also put stock such as potato shippers and plants into the correct lanes to go to stores and check dispatch lanes of an evening before stock is taken to stores. I occasionally print out all store price cards.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I enjoy my L3 Qualification due to always moving around departments therefore I was increasing my knowledge and learning new skills constantly therefore it was never boring. The teams I have worked with are very helpful and treat all staff fairly and my section leader is very supportive. Overall I think some departments should have apprentices more involved with the department staff to gain confidence and experience.

  • I feel valued by my section leader whom is very supportive, always sets me new targets to achieve and gives me advice when needed. I feel valued by my section manager as he is always thinking of what is best for me as a career and how I can improve my skills and knowledge. Within some departments I was more involved in tasks/ projects/ meetings on a daily basis, which is where I will be looking for a future career.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • During my induction I was given a plan of my 3 year apprenticeship explaining what departments id be working on and a time period. I was trained straight away using the order pickers and scissor lift trucks which was very useful and also trained on the bulk mover at the start of my second year. I was given a lot of support from my section leader and section manager and also by my apprenticeship assessor from MANTRA. A one to one meeting is carried out every month with my section leader to discuss progress, targets and company updates.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • The salary is outstanding. I can afford everything I need/ want and holidays/ social events with my monthly pay. As an apprentice, our £ per hour increases when all staff get a pay rise and also after each year of the apprenticeship completed.

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • Aldi have a lot of events planned to raise money for our charity ( Teenage Cancer Trust) which all staff can take part in. Aldi also had a 10 year event located at our warehouse with activities carried out throughout the day. I have also took part in a High School careers event with Aldi at a local high school. Aldi offer discount membership prices at leisure centres for all staff members. Since the second to last year of high school, I have always had a job/ apprenticeship however when Im not working I tend to set goals at the gym or attend social events with friends.
