  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • Telecommunication's field engineer - working in the copper network on a day to day basis installing broadband and telephone lines for customers also fault finding within the network. I interact with different people daily from all walks of life. I also do a fair amount of admin work that is required once completing a job. I complete my own timesheets and log sheets on a daily basis as well as keeping all my equipment up to date and in a clean working order. I communicate with other BT Openreach engineers regularly each day to learn and also help on various tasks or issues that arise.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have learn lots of skills over the past year or so. I have leant how to test and fault on the copper network as well as install. I have learnt how to work on overhead cable safely. some of the training course I have attended are as follows. Street works, hand held tester training, Pole steps and ladders, fibre to the cabinet provide and repair. safe driver courses and various other training course to keep me performing and undertaking task safely.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I enjoy the program because I like to learn more and more each day. the program has helped to develop my self into the engineer I am today one year later. I am aiming to be even more qualified and trained by next year as I have recently been put forward to under take my underground accreditation which means I can work on the underground network successfully and safely.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by BT?
  • I feel really valued by BT as they have invested a lot of time and money into the skills I have been trained for. I create a lot of revenue for the company within the task I undertake on a daily basis

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • the program is fantastic. the element of organisation is second to none. every thing flowed smoothly from day one. I was kept well informed as to what was happening next and what was going on within the future.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • The support I receive from my training provided is 100% I can contact my training provider at anytime through telephone or email with any queries I have.

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I personally receive lots of support from my employee, mainly from my manager who always gives 100% to settle any queries I have within the company.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • my salary is okay. the first year I worked I am set to £20000 annually, this is difficult to live on for the first year but you have got to see the bigger picture. the following year I get a pay rise to £26500 annually. aswell as my underground skill which is roughly another £2000 on top.

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • Their are lots of opportunity's outside of work. I have recently played a part in a Brownie badge challenge out of work time. this is to build a course and design a brownie openreach engineering badge for Brownies age 5-9.

  • Yes

  • brilliant career and plenty of room to progress to different skills and job roles.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BT?
  • Health and safety plays a huge part in working for BT as well as a general interest in telecommunications and the copper network.
