  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • My role is to support business customers with their managed WAN services, I perform diagnostics on routers and switches as part of providing remote support to the customer. I am now working towards completing the CCNA accreditation through my role which is very interesting and will help me greatly with my future work.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I enjoy my programme very much and am grateful for the opportunities. I have now finished my apprenticeship and am waiting for my assimilation date. However I feel that considering how many apprentices are in BT certain areas could be focussed on more and improved, especially for apprentices not in London or other main hubs.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by BT?
  • I feel valued by BT considering how many apprentices/employees the company has, my team and past colleagues make me feel very valued. For such a large company they make every effort to ensure that their employees feel valued and listened to which is impressive as I had never seen this until I joined BT.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • Due to certain circumstances I feel that my programme wasn't very well organised however some of those circumstances were out of people's control. I feel that considering how many apprentices are in BT certain areas could be focussed on more and improved, especially for apprentices not in London or other main hubs.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • I have received a lot of support from my training provider/assessor. This has helped me complete my NVQ work as well as my college work as sometimes I have stalled due to my non-technical background but the support I have received has been very helpful and my assessor was very fair.

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I receive support from my employer when I ask/need it considering how many apprentices/employees the company has, I receive a lot of support from my direct team which I am very grateful for. My managers have always been there when I need them and have been very efficient.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • It meets my basic costs however depending on apprentice ages it would not be enough to live on as an independent person, compared to other employers who hire apprentices though it is a higher salary. Due to the general rise in housing prices etc. in the South East it is difficult to live as a single independent person.

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • Yes there are lots of opportunities outside of work. Certain groups within BT plan days out and learning experiences which are very interesting and we also have team bonding days where we go out of work to do different activities. There are also opportunities to meet other apprentices outside of work.

  • 9. Would you recommend BT to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • Because they are a good company who seem to value their employees and provide benefits/support. It is very motivating seeing colleagues who have been with the company for over 30 years and enjoy their work, this makes me feel secure in my job and is part of the reason why I would recommend them.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BT?
  • Don't be scared because it is a big company, things shift quite regularly but this is (most of the time) a good thing because it pushes you out of your comfort zone and you get to really see how the business world works. The hiring process can be slightly long but that is just because they want the best people for the jobs.
